I'm a hobbiest game developer who at any given time has 5 concurrently running projects that usually get no further than the concept phase. I have started a few space sim games but never got very far eg:A 2D Shooter/Space Trader (click screenshot to play):And more recently:I joined the forum because it seems like a great place to get some testing/feedback.

Welcome Shannon to SSC and I wish I could get half as far as you have in your games here. i really liked the space backgrounds in that first one but I think that the missiles/guns on the ship need to fire faster because the enemy fires very quickly compared to me, so I didn't last long

Did you do all that in java? Is there any good game tutorials or engines for java? One thing that is great about java games is that they are platform independent.

Yes, I write all my games in Java for a couple of reasons - cross platform (as you mentioned), easily embedded in web pages and above all is just a nice language. There are a ton of good tutorials and engines for Java, I would suggest Slick for a good basic 2D game library (it's what my 2D space sim was written using). The source code for that game is also available here if you are interested. Also there is a really good Java game community over at java-gaming.org which is an excellent place to get help.

Welcome to SSC ShannonSmithHaven’t had a chance to look at anything yet but just going by the pics of Dark Galaxy looks like you have an Elite thing going on there.

It's not actually going to be very elite like, I just like that graphical style. Play wise it will fly similar to Wing Commander or x-wing, and I'm not even sure I want real time space combat at all (which tends to be a bit boring in my opinion).
