I just discovered this site; it looks awesome

. I'm a long time player of space games, since the days of paper teletypes on PDP-10's that printed your lunar lander's height and velocity and waited for your burn entry, through the Elite days in the mid 80's, and X3 in the 2000's.I'm developing an Elite-like game now: I posted about it over in the indie project forum thisaway->: http://www.spacesimcentral.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=69&t=2867It's just a one man effort, so don't expect the world, but I'm giving it my best shot. It's my semi-retirement project; need something to keep my brain from turning to mush. That project is the something.Looking forward to poking around this site a little. I only have so much time due to the demands of developing a game, and trying to have something of a life outside that as well (a bit necessary, or one goes mad), but I will definitely pop in here from time to time.Cheers...

Hi HeliosphereFirstly, a very special welcome to you to the SSC

You have landed in the right place

Its great to see a game dev visit here! And its great you have such a long history in programming, a true retro enthusiast! A PDP-10?

That makes my old Amiga 500 look modern again!

It's still enormously cool though you have worked with such machines in the past and looking at your demos, you certainly know your stuff and no mistake. I will comment on your game in your other thread, but for now I would like to ask you something. I have a few Space Sim related threads scattered across some other gaming forums and with your permission, I would like to give your game a shout to hopefully drum up some more interest.Anyways have fun looking around the site and some of the crazy posts you might find.......ahem.............

. Oh, and do check out the open source Pioneer project, perhaps you could give the guys some ideas from your extensive experience? Also, I am not expecting the world from your game,.......................just a Galaxy (or two)!

Thanks for the warm welcome, Geraldine. Amiga 500! I had a 1000 (bought it in 86) and still own a 4000 that i used for many years, well after the nominal death of the platform, although I'm not certain it boots any more.

That would be wonderful. I don't want to oversell it at this point, of course: it's a long while before it turns into a "real game", and many things could sink the ship before then. But of course, it doesn't hurt to have people aware of it, either. So far it's been an invisible project. I can try to answer questions about it over in the other thread, if anybody drops by there.I've seen some other pretty nice looking projects around these forums too, some that appear to have a decent level of resources behind them. Maybe this genre of game is not quite as dead as I thought. Good to see.

Oh!?! A a sick Miggy 4000? I can help you with that too! Drop by a site called Amibay, you will find the Amiga community is still very much alive and kicking. Thanks to the guys on there, I got my own 4000 (060 equipped) up and running again after 10 years. A great machine for playing Frontier!

No problem, I will give folks some links back to your dev thread on here, the vids you posted and edit this post to show you what I have posted elsewhere. There are space sim fans out there in the most unusual of places. The trick is to track them down

I even discovered one on the Grimrock forum! :lol:EDIT: As promised, here is links back to the threads I created or added to. Hopefully that lot rattles the drum a bit for your game

Far from it! Welcome Heliosphere, from an old Elite (BBC) veteran, and now an Oolite veteran!

Welcome HeliosphereWe are doing our best to over take the universe with space/scifi games

Just since I started SSC at the end of 2008 you can definitely see the huge ramp up in game production. I haven't taken a look at your game thread yet but will shortly. Welcome again and enjoy!

Somewhat embarrassingly, I have never tried it. I know it's only an "apt-get install" away on my Linux box, I've just never quite found the time to investigate. Is it fun?

Most definitely! All the old magic of Elite, but with much better gfx, hundreds of mods etc. I'll not ramble-on, though there is one small but crucial difference between Elite gameplay and Oolite gameplay - Oolite is not player-centric.
