Found a nice little video that gives an update on how the two Voyager probes are doing and what will happen to them in the future. 70s tech might not be that impressive by today's standards but never let it be said it wasn't tough! :o

Thanks Geraldine, I enjoyed this. The time spans they talk about make humans seem so insignificant. Just shows that we can really build a great satellite, space is a harsh place and we have 40-50yro tech that is still working. We could make a replacement voyager 10000x better.

Yes a new Voyager could do a lot more than the old 70s originals but, would they last as long? Simple and robust seem to be the thing if your designing for very long duration space flight rather than fancy fragile tech. ;)

"The two Voyagers will outlast Earth," said Bill Kurth, co-author of one of the papers and a research scientist at the University of Iowa. "They're in their own orbits around the galaxy for five billion years or longer. And the probability of them running into anything is almost zero."

Magicians have calculated that million-to-one chances crop up nine times out of ten.
