I was looking over some of the pics from the HiRISE (High Resolution Science Experiment) on Mars. The HiRISE is a camera that is on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Not sure if the pics have been edited for color or shadows etc. But it these pics haven't been altered the camera is showing some excellent stuff on Mars. You can learn and see more on what the HiRISE project is doing from here http://hirise.lpl.arizona.edu/. Here is just a few I liked. In the winter, a layer of carbon dioxide ice covers the dunes, and in the spring as the sun warms the ice it evaporates. This is a very active process, and sand dislodged from the crests of the dunes cascades down, forming dark streaks.Pitted Layers Northeast of Hellas RegionImage shows "Victoria Crater," an impact crater at Meridiani Planum, near the equator of Mars. The crater is approximately 800 meters (about half a mile) in diameter.HiRISE captured this image of an eroded mesa made famous by its similarity to a human face in a Viking Orbiter image with much lower spatial resolution and a different lighting geometry.Nirgal and Uzboi Valles are two valleys to the north of the Argyre impact basin in the southern hemisphere. At this location, the smaller channel, Nirgal Vallis, empties out into the larger Uzboi Vallis.

One of these space crafts have my name (and my wife's name) in a cd rom. If I remember correctly, NASA created a CD Rom with over a million names in it, and send it to Mars. (Now I am thinking of it, my descendants might be eligible for Mars colonization :D :D ). And you might want to listen to this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mythodea if you like this kind of music. (Not my kind of music, more of a classical/proggresive rock guy, but I liked it very much :D ).

I know this one is because these pics are from Dec 2009 and one from 2010 :) You would think after seeing these pictures the NASA engineers would say a manned mission is going to Mars within 10yrs.SolCommand that first pic least from the description is very accurate you can even see a dust cloud in it (little to the left of center).

God, these are fabulous! The colours must have been processed by computers, though, surely? Unless the boffins aren't telling us some things they REALLY should be?
