This project hasn't been talked about yet so I thought I would make a post. I found it over a year ago and checked up on it every once in a while to make sure it was still going, I thought it was starting to fizzle out when there has been a flood of check-ins on the github page (even some today): https://github.com/Librelancer/Librelancer
Basically they are working on a engine that will run very well on modern day machines with using C#/C++ and OpenGL and will be able to run on Linux
and Windows. You will still need Freelancer assets from the original game but its more of a engine replacement. I haven't tried this setup I need to locate my freelancer disc or least find the core files to give this a whirl.
Its to be expected that there is issues since they are replacing the 'engine' of the original so there will probably be bugs and missing functionality but for now its starting to have some very robust release notes on some of the check-ins so check it out.
