Lesson learned: pitfalls lurk from start to finish ... and beyond (sometimes).

It's a shame really that so many projects end exactly this way.

End? I'm not sure this one even started! ;)Creative people can be so flighty, can't they?

Shame he never got started with it, would have like to seen what he would have done. Forgot to mention that you can find a copy of darkness falls on the Russian Elite games form, look in the Elite section and I think there is a patch for it some where.

I apologise for such a necro-bump to this thread, but I was looking through some old backup discs that I've got, and found a copy of Darkness Falls on one of them - "preview version A" according to the ingame information. I think I originally got it from a copy of "PC Utilities" magazine back in the early 2000s. If anyone's interested I should be able to upload it here.

Go ahead Gunbladelad I would like to see it as I mistakenly said it was "Darkness falls" on the Elite game site but it is fact "XElite" with a 20th anniversary splash screen.

OK - that's it uploaded (and at the time of this post) awaiting approval. I submitted it as just a space game called "Darkness Falls" even though it's really an Elite clone demo.

Nice one Gunbladelad. :good: Will it run on under modern OS or does it require Windows 98?.

I've not tried it on anything newer than XP (and it works fine for that...). It's basically a single executable so if there's any issues I'm guessing XP compatability should sort them out.

Had a quick play around with game and I now know why I though XElite was Darkness Falls as XElite is based on Darkness Falls.

An interesting article here[/url] - Ian Bell is to release Elite TNK for the thirtieth anniversary!

Have Bell and Braben buried the hatchet now, IIRC was it not Braben who stopped the games release.

Sounds interesting - I don't want to know where they buried the hatchet - I'd hate to know they've become axe murderers thanks to dealing with some Gametek executives...

"Darkness Falls" is one of those great "what ifs" of Elite fans like myself. The New Kind when it came out was way ahead of its time in being an accessible polished modern reimplementation of Elite

Crikey is Elite 40 this year and Frontier developments have another golden opportunity to remake Elite, after all they have the assets from ED and they could knock up a bit of code.
But I guess they wont bother.
