Starshatter

Stashatter takes place in a galaxy known as the "Blue Drift" where the two colonial superpowers, The Terillian Alliance and the Marakan Hegemony are gridlocked in a cold war standoff that, following a civil war in a neighboring neutral system, escalates into open conflict in the systems.

I wonder if this game is in "abandoned" status now. It can't be purchased in any way, so it could be, but the abandonware sector was alway something like a gray area.

I can't see it being anything other than abandoned, by both its publisher and lone developer. Why it was abandonee, I'm wondering if we'll ever know.

Awhile ago I contacted the guy who made Starshatter regarding purchasing the license to his engine to make a game. Unfortunately, the price was/is beyond my limits.I may still have his information if anyone is interested, however. I still have a lot I'd like to do with a good space sim engine.EDIT: Just looked - nada. Too bad :( He wanted somewhere in the upper thousands, if my memory serves me correctly. Also, first post! Hi everyone. :) Glad to see this community thriving!

Awww. Of course it's his baby and he can do with it what he wants - but open sourcing a game (minus assets, usually) is a great way to ensure it doesn't fade into obscurity.

It's really sad, as Starshatter had the potential to be the Falcon 4 of space sims. All it needed was some more polish and bug fixes.

Yeah, he used to post on comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.space-sim way back in the day. I miss those days with Bill, bret, brad and gang! The Flame Wars were fun as hell!I've had Starshatter since it came out, but I never really got into it. The flight model and control scheme were pretty user unfriendly, and it was pretty much on rails, which I loath in a space sim.

I have to say "O_o" as well, a game with a dynamic campaign on the level of Starshatter ("Falcon 4 in space" is pretty apt) can in no way be described as "on rails".

eh..like I said, I didn't really get into it. It seemed on rails to me, but I don't think I made it passed the first few missions. I might dig it out of my collection and reinstall it. Wasn't it all mission based without freeform?

If it's really abandonware than yes. But i don't know how the legal status is about this game. Hardwar is also not available anymore and went abandonware.

Starshatter has a dynamical campaign. You have missions but the outcome of the missions decide how the campaign continues. Your tactical decisions can change everything. So it isn't really freeform like Privateer because you are always playing a military path, but it's not on rails.

You found it on amazon? Good on you! Sadly, I think that's it man. It wasn't widely available beyond Matrix Games. Just another, tiny, footnote in the grand scheme of things.

I actually contacted the guy who developed Starshatter, inquiring about licensing his engine. I've since lost the contact info, but I remember the price was (to me) way too much for what you'd get; he wanted to sell it for several thousand dollars.

It was a pretty awesome game. I liked the physics of the game as well as the variety of ships. I always dreamed of trying out some multiplayer, it had lots of potential. Very satisfying rising up through the ranks from a pilot all the way to fleet commander.

So can we actually build Sharshatter and play it? I have always hated the fact that this game left the market never to return.
