So am I right in thinking you are achieving these improved visuals without needing a gpu upgrade?
Hehe, well if anything it may stress the GPU more, but thats only down to the fact that the terrain geometry is being generated faster. (So there's more of it in a shorter time being thrown at the GPU.)Most of our terrains used to have near to this amount of detail at some point, however the algorithms were too slow, so generating it took forever. So if one of those older terrains were left to generate it would stress the GPU no less than these ones, as total number of triangles are similar. The challenge now will be keeping these fast speeds and producing a convincing terrestrial type planet. So far these have been simple balls of rock with simple colouring.

Yeah, there's some old junk at the site, but we can clean it up. ;)

Cheers. YEah now we have a slightly recognisable moon we can do this :) We'll do the same for Cydonia and Olympus Mons mars bases when we get this Mars heightmap working as well.

Actually, this just gave me an idea. Since the Apollo 11 landing site is an historic monument perhaps it could be represented in the game. It would be preserved in a Frontier stye geodesic dome, with all the old junk inside. ;) This would require the ability to add a custom building to a single base of course, and would require a lot of work well above my skill set, but custom buildings for scenery, missions, etc. would be nice.

Thats a great idea Marcel. Nasa even has a collection of 3D models of it's famous craft (and other things) that are free to use if anyone would fancy converting them for Pioneer. They are mostly in .3ds format, but some are in .lwo, .fbx, or .obj too. Have a look here http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/3d_resources/models.html

Cool resource, Geraldine! It would be funny to see some of those astronaut guys floating around spaceports or those large parked ships sometime, conducting repairs or such.

The astonaut guys might want something to wear on their heads when they remove their helmets, for that purpose they might travel to planet hat ;)
