Games Like FreeLancer

Post by JonnieR »

I really enjoyed Freelancer and even Darkstar One, but where are all the space combat/action/adventure games these days?I have windows 7, pro, 64 bit running on my system. Are there any games similar to the two mentioned that will run on my system?

Hi JonnieRFirstly, welcome to the SSC. :) As for new games there are many to choose from. You could try the "X" series, although I would say they are a lot slower than games like Freelancer. Here is a link http://www.egosoft.com/news/current_en.php There is also Evochron Mercenary which is quite nice. Not tried that one yet myself though. Here is the site http://www.starwraith.com/evochronmercenary/index.htmFreeware wise, you could download a copy of the Elite remakes, Oolite, Pioneer or FFE3D. Here is links for themOolite http://www.oolite.org/aboutPioneer http://pioneerspacesim.net/FFE3D http://spacesimcentral.com/downloads/ft2.php?dir=/FFED3DHope that helps you :)

Geraldine,Thanks for the reply, I have downloaded the Evochron Mercenary Demo and I will try the game out.I actually own the entire X series, which I bought from Steam. Unfortunately the only manual offered is in a PDF format that you cannot read if you print it out. The X series seems very deep and interesting but the learning curve is very high without being able to reference a printed manual. I have all three games including X: terran Conflict, X: Reunion and X: Albion Prelude. I have not been able to make any progress in learning the games as yet without the manual as a reference. If there was copy of manual in text format it would solve alot of problems. I would like to master these games.

For a few dollars you should be able to bring that PDF to any office store and they should be able to print it out for you, or if you have dual monitors or a tablet you can open it and play the game on your other monitor :)

I have some adobe software that converts PDF back to word docs, but the formatting of the X series manual is such that you cannot control the font size and it is much to small to read when you print it out. The problem is that the black background and the very small type size render any printed copy unreadable. I do not have dual montiors or a tablel.

You could try Foxit. Its a free PDF viewer that can print. Here is a link http://download.cnet.com/Foxit-Reader/3000-10743_4-10313206.html

Never been that impressed by the X manuals, the English version always seem to be poorly written. You might be better off looking on the X forum as I think there are some guides to the games which you should be able to print out.

Good idea Pinhead I'll look for some guides or walkthroughs that are printable.I did download a demo of Evochron Mercenary and just finished the tutorial. The most important section of the documentation is the keyboard and mouse map of the controls. You would think they would provide the one or two pages you need to print out have those pages in front of you. The tutorial was well-done though. This game does not have great graphics but they are passable. It does seem to have more depth, realism, and openess than Freelancer and certainly Darkstar One. It definitely has a slightly higher learning curve. So far it seems to be a worthwhile purchase. I will let you know more when I get into the game further.

Strange that there is no keyboard print out for the games. There is a forum for the star wraith games, maybe it should be changed to Evochron now http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=48

Nobody has mentioned Galaxy on Fire 2 so far. Also available on PC. My dad liked it very much, nice graphics, easy gameplay, still a nice little space opera!

[background=rgb(33, 47, 58)]Galaxy on Fire 2 has rather simplistic gameplay but I'd rather play this than the X series cause it's more fun.[/background]
