Nothing more than a rumor but Seamless Entertainment may be working on some thing according to this posting on this site.http://news.bigdownload.com/2011/04/18/rumor-seemless-entertainment-working-on-space-shooter-game/
Quote:
Both images show a monitor with a space shooter-like HUD which would seem to indicate that the game, which the article says is due in early 2012, will be of the Wing Commander-Freespace variety.
Can’t get into the source although it said there was a couple of pic there and theirs nothing on Seamless Entertainment site.http://www.seamlessentertainment.com/

Maybe we will get some news on the game in the summertime when I believe E3 is conducted. Another rumor of sim game development is from the dev team behind Warhawk on the PS3. There has been lots of talk that their secret project game will be in space, so we shall see.

The thing I thought about is where they are based “Austin Texas” which IIRC was home to Origin and Digitalanvil. Wonder if there’s any connectionThere’s also a pic of a ringed gas giant, which pops up now and again on the site.

Since we are talking about rumors, it seems that Soldak Entertainment 's (Depths of Peril, Din's Curse) next game, may have a space setting. Check this:http://www.soldak.com/Blogs/Steven/Next-game-intial-thoughts.html

Seamless have announced there game called ” SOL: Exodus”
Quote:
AUSTIN, Texas, July 20, 2011—Seamless Entertainment™, an independent game developer located in Austin, Texas, is setting its sights on re-energizing a faded genre once known for legendary hits like Wing Commander® and FreeSpace™. Seamless unveiled its first trailer today for SOL: Exodus™, the company’s 3D space-action game. The game, currently in development, will be a downloadable title with a planned release later this year. The trailer is currently available at http://www.YouAreSOL.com.SOL: Exodus will deliver epic space battles featuring enormous capital ships, hordes of spacecraft and beautifully rendered planetary battlegrounds in an action-packed presentation reminiscent of iconic sci-fi TV shows and movies. The Seamless team is led by game industry veterans Dan Magaha (Firaxis Games/2K/NCsoft) and Chris Stockman, design director on the mega-hit Saints Row for Xbox 360.“With SOL: Exodus, players will enjoy gameplay staples of the genre such as dogfighting and engaging giant capital ships,” said Creative Director Stockman. “But we‘ve also introduced some unique special abilities for added mission depth and interactivity. I’ll be talking more about those as we get closer to launching later this year.”In SOL: Exodus, players will assume the role of fighter pilot in a battle for the survival of the human race, commanding their multi-purpose tactical fighter in battles across the most recognizable landmarks in our Solar System. Together with a squadron of wingmen, they will dogfight in the rings of Saturn, engage enormous capital ships around Neptune, thwart a trap in the chaotic, intense atmosphere of Jupiter, and much more!“It’s not just a coincidence that this project is coming together in Austin, where the Wing Commander series was born back in the 1990s,” said Studio Director Magaha. “Austin has really become a hub for determined indie developers. I think we’ve got some of that maverick personality in this team; we’re just driven by the goal of making this game great.”

Theirs some pics and some more info about Sol Exodus on their site http://www.youaresol.com/ and they have started a blog and are looking for questions about the game.http://solexodus.com/dev-blog/First one should be about changing that urlAlso a bit from IGN about it.“Whether or not you care about story, what SOL: Exodus has going for it is its gameplay. This is a classic space combat game, but not a simulation -- there's no shield management or hyper-realistic physics at play. You can play with a controller, a joystick or mouse and keyboard, with the goal being for players to jump in and start immediately kicking ass rather than spending hours mastering complex controls. You play from the cockpit, blasting away at enemies with a combination of missiles and bullets. It is a sci-fi title, but more grounded in reality than set in a world with things like cloaking or shields. More importantly, the short time I spent with it was fun. Shooting ships in space, where you can fly in a full 360 degrees is liberating, and fulfills all my nerdy Star Wars fueled fantasies.”http://m.uk.ign.com/articles/1191023Also some more pics from IGN.http://uk.pc.ign.com/dor/objects/113723/sol-exodus/images/sol-exodus-20110827085109551.html

Definitely not reinventing the genre. But the gameplay was smooth and the HUD was very responsive. I would have liked to see a bit better visuals for a game that will be coming out 2011-12. I very much like the effect of shooting and flying into that station/hull and flying out the other end. But after that the destruction of that satellite could have been better. But they are still developing and my biggest questions are storyline and size of universe and what can you do in it besides shoot baddies.

Definitely agree I don’t think they will lighting any bonfires in-less theirs more to come.Had the impression that the game take place with in our own solar system, with each of the planet having a number of mission set around them an I guess the asteroid belt would be in there as well.

Interview here with one of the Exodus's devshttp://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/112645-PAX-2011-SOL-Exodus-Resurrects-Dead-Space-Combat-Sims
Quote:
"There have been open world space games that have been released but what they've been is this boring [gameplay] where all you do is fight piddly space pirates and you play this stupid economy. I don't think that the gamers of today want to play macro economy games. And if they do, they can go play Eve or play one of these other super-niche games where it's more about buying at one station and selling at another station.
Macro economy simulation and super-niche game, must mean an X game.Real interesting thing about this interview is that if they can sell half a million copies, they might have a go at doing a GTA in space.

This was interesting as well:
Quote:
like your ship's computer being able to interact with objects in space such as defense satellites and the aforementioned transport ships. Once you scan these objects, you can hack into them using a simple code. Fighting big huge capital ships is not about passively watching them trade laser fire; your little fighter can scan its big rivals to locate weak points and your HUD will highlight them in red. Blow all those points up - there will be a representation of its destruction including visible decks and pieces flying of the big ship - and the capital starship will go down. In addition to enemy ships, most of the stations or satellites you encounter are destructible, allowing you to fly right through them if you blow them up in time.
I think what I am interested in most is the storyline and the size and scope of the game universe.

This is a little worrying actually, if they trim all the "boring" bits out, they might be left with a very shallow game. Yes trading in space games can be boring if it's not right, however it also adds more depth and gives the player more to do than just shooting at everything. So yes I agree that this does seem to be a space sim done by the numbers, nothing new and ground breaking here at least with the current info to hand.

Probably just hype with them firing a broadside at there competition. But I would agree that any GTA style game set in space would have to have some sort of trading in it.
