RE: Just for Fun, Your Hometown!
Slightly off topic, but related... is there any kind of limit to how many stations and cities can be within a single system? If the engine can handle, for example, 10 cities on a single planet... could it handle 5 cities on 4 planets? 10 cities per planet in a system with 3 settled planets? As long as the per-planet threshold was respected, would it matter?

No, I don't think there's any hard coded limits and it can handle all of those in the current Hometowns mod, which is a lot. Now, by handle I don't mean that it will perform well...

RE: Just for Fun, Your Hometown!
That's what I meant, is performance affected by the presence of lots of cities in a system as a whole or is it just the number of cities on a nearby planet?

RE: Just for Fun, Your Hometown!
It's the number of cities it has to render the hits the performance most. You can have a planet with a lot of cities, so long as they're not all within easy visual range of one another... that said, it needs some experimenting with!

fluffyfreak Posted 12 July 2013 - 02:27 AMHave you tried enabling all of the towns and then flying around Earth? I'm interested in seeing how well it handles itWith graphics all set to the max, the worst performance was 19fps with 3 cities visible at once. A nice improvement, and playable!

shadmar Posted 22 June 2013 - 02:20 AMThere was a couple of commas missing if you enable all and author cities should have comment using -- in front.I only found one missing comma, and I think the -- comment may be a word wrap issue, but anyway here's the version I used to test fluffyfreak's addition for you folks to play with. Feedback on the way it performs and missing commas would be appreciated. edit: For those who don't know, press Ctrl+I to get the FPS.

Here's my latest version. I've added two spaceports, Milan on Earth and Bradbury Landing on Mars. I put it in the SSC downloads area.http://spacesimcentral.com/ssc/files/file/1062-hometowns-201403/
RE: Just for Fun, Your Hometown!
Who is the member of Bradbury Landing ? 0_° :)
RE: Just for Fun, Your Hometown!
I wonder who it could be?
RE: Just for Fun, Your Hometown!
I just added an updated version (201403a) because I found that parts of Tomm's Sanctuary were buried. I copied the seed from Phobos to Deimos and it seems OK now. Please let me know if anyplace else in the Sol system needs fixing. The link 3 posts above still works.
RE: Just for Fun, Your Hometown!
Here's an update regarding compatibility wit Scout+ G17. Scout+ now randomizes the start location on Earth among the first six spaceports. If you put your hometown in at one of those you can restart the game until you start at home. You might even put yours at the top of the list.
RE: Just for Fun, Your Hometown!
I just upload a new version because walterar just updated Scout+ and I have to start a new game anyway. I added Helsinki for luovahulluus and Preston for Evarchart.http://spacesimcentral.com/ssc/files/file/1062-hometowns-201406/
RE: Just for Fun, Your Hometown!
I've just uploaded version 201601s for Pioneer and Scout Plus. From the changelog;Added Naples for salborrelli.Added all space station types from Pioneer and Scout Plus.Moved Torvalds Platform to new position.Added seeds to Earth space stations.Full instructions are on the download page and in the zip.http://spacesimcentral.com/ssc/files/file/1062-spaceports-hometowns201601s-modzip/ edit: After uploading I noticed that the spaceports weren't quite in alphabetical order. I had Aberdeen above Aachen. I corrected it and tried to overwrite the file, but there are now two files with the same name. :dontknow: The file on the bottom is the corrected version.
RE: Just for Fun, Your Hometown!
Great to see your still updating Hometowns Marcel. The game just wouldn't be the same without it. :queen:
RE: Just for Fun, Your Hometown!
I just uploaded version 201604. The main change is the inclusion of walterar's seed values for the Sol gas giants to improve their appearance. They got altered as a result of the new random number generator.http://spacesimcentral.com/ssc/files/file/1062-spaceports-hometowns201604-modzip/

RE: Just for Fun, Your Hometown!
I think we should start making some of this mod core, especially the gas giant fixes!
RE: Just for Fun, Your Hometown!
That's a good idea. :good: Scout G26 has a "utility" that shows the seeds of the gas giants whenever who enters a system. If you explore the galaxy and find a giant gas who looks better than any of those who are now, see the seeds in the console and share here.
RE: Just for Fun, Your Hometown!
I think the heightmap for Mars, Vuzz's Olympus Mons location and walterar's seed should be added too.

RE: Just for Fun, Your Hometown!
GitHub seems to be having some serious issues right now. I've created a "modport" branch with some of the changes backported.I skipped most of the hometowns for now, but seeds, olympus mons etc and the "mars.hmap" are in there. We'll discuss when I can get the PR to work it but I personally think all that should go in. The reason I've left out the hometowns list for now is just because of the performance concerns people might have about enabling that many for a single planet. Plus it means that we still need the mod Marcel
RE: Just for Fun, Your Hometown!
I personally favor using the spaceports from Pioneer plus the spaceports from Frontier and the actual spaceports that exist today. It would make Earth seem more densely populated but the spaceports should be far enough apart to avoid performance issues. Sort of like this;
