Here at TGB one of the most excitÂÂing things we get to do is talk to the peoÂÂple who actuÂÂally make the games we know and love. Recently we got the amazÂÂing oppurÂÂtuÂÂnity to sit down with Bernd Lehahn the direcÂÂtor of Egosoft, develÂÂoper of the X series. DurÂÂing our interÂÂview with Mr. Lehahn we were able to get some insights into why they make their games the way they do and we also got some excitÂÂing new details about their upcomÂÂing release X: Rebirth. TGB: First I want to say thank you for takÂÂing the time to talk with us at TGB. We are very thankÂÂful for the time you are spendÂÂing with us today.TGB: The X series seems to be your priÂÂmary title as a comÂÂpany. What has inspired you to conÂÂtinue develÂÂopÂÂment of the x uniÂÂverse instead of expandÂÂing into other areas?Bernd Lehahn: This was really an easy deciÂÂsion. We all love space games. Yes it is true, that only few develÂÂopÂÂers have the luxÂÂury of conÂÂcenÂÂtratÂÂing on one series, but I am sure this is not because they wouldn’t like to. It is relÂÂaÂÂtively rare today that a develÂÂoper keeps full conÂÂtrol of his own IP and directly makes money with every sold copy of a game. Once you are in this posiÂÂtion howÂÂever, it is great to work with a comÂÂmuÂÂnity of fans and build someÂÂthing larger. This is also the reaÂÂson why we were able to supÂÂport our games much longer than a norÂÂmal game develÂÂoper can afford. So it is all closely conÂÂnected with keepÂÂing conÂÂtrol and buildÂÂing a larger IP. Hmm… I hope I can answer some of these quesÂÂtions with a simÂÂple: Yes or No ;)TGB: The X uniÂÂverse has been quite sucÂÂcessÂÂful for Egosoft. Why has Egosoft choÂÂsen not to expand onto other platÂÂforms such as the Xbox 360 or PlaystaÂÂtion 3? Are their hardÂÂware limÂÂiÂÂtaÂÂtions? ConÂÂtrol Problems?Bernd Lehahn: Well it’s cerÂÂtainly not a trivÂÂial task to bring such a comÂÂplex and hardÂÂware hunÂÂgry franÂÂchise to a conÂÂsole. Our games have stood and will stand in the future, for total freeÂÂdom inside a very large uniÂÂverse. I don’t think it’s imposÂÂsiÂÂble to bring this to a conÂÂsole, but it’s a big task. So as a small develÂÂoper we have to conÂÂcenÂÂtrate on one platÂÂform at a time.TGB: Many preÂÂviÂÂous PC excluÂÂsive develÂÂopÂÂers have comÂÂplained that piracy is a big probÂÂlem for them and have moved away from the PC platÂÂform as a whole in some cases. Do you, as a develÂÂoper, feel piracy is a huge probÂÂlem for you?Bernd Lehahn: Piracy sure harms us, but I think we found a good comÂÂproÂÂmise in how we proÂÂtected our last two games (and in how we removed that proÂÂtecÂÂtion afterÂÂwards). It is always imposÂÂsiÂÂble to judge how much more we could sell, but I do not believe any develÂÂoper moves to another platÂÂform just because of this. ConÂÂsoles are a big marÂÂket and develÂÂopÂÂers would be stuÂÂpid not to develop games for this market.TGB: The X series, while it has some story eleÂÂments is priÂÂmarÂÂily an open sandÂÂbox. Has Egosoft ever conÂÂsidÂÂered doing a more focused cinÂÂeÂÂmatic camÂÂpaign to drive the story behind the X uniÂÂverse?Bernd Lehahn: Yes, in fact with every game we have tried to improve on the stoÂÂryÂÂtelling and experÂÂiÂÂmented with ways how to comÂÂbine the open sandÂÂbox with a plot. X2 had some cutscene driÂÂven plot eleÂÂments, X3:Reunion had plot minigames etc. But this was all not perÂÂfect because we had to stick with a lot of the existÂÂing designs. That’s another reaÂÂson why X Rebirth had to be redesigned from scratch and is not just X4.TGB : SpeakÂÂing of X Rebirth are there any excitÂÂing new feaÂÂtures that you can tell us about?Bernd Lehahn: Many… I am writÂÂing a series of postÂÂings for our own forums for the next few days in which I describe in depth a lot of the new game design and cool features. One very cool new feaÂÂture is drones for examÂÂple. The player will have only ONE ship to fly himÂÂself. But this one ship is super cool. You can move around inside, transÂÂport and talk to NPCs aboard etc. But you also can still own and conÂÂtrol drones and capÂÂiÂÂtal ships. Drones can even be conÂÂtrolled in first perÂÂson, so in realÂÂity you still have lots of ships to steer from cockÂÂpit view. The only difÂÂferÂÂence is that this is done using a virÂÂtual realÂÂity sysÂÂtem (gogÂÂgles come down from top of your cockÂÂpit and the co-pilot takes over flyÂÂing the main ship) and you won’t die if these drones get destroyed. This sysÂÂtem gives us a lot more freeÂÂdom in designÂÂing new and very diverse experiences.TGB : Are you going to be adding some FPS style gameÂÂplay to the X uniÂÂverse? PlanÂÂeÂÂtary InterÂÂacÂÂtion perhaps?Bernd Lehahn: No. Not that we didn’t think of it. MarÂÂryÂÂing an X game with someÂÂthing like Mass Effect sure brings some nice ideas, but again: We are a small develÂÂoper and have to do one step at a time. You WILL howÂÂever be able to step out of your ship and stand on platÂÂforms. TalkÂÂing to NPCs is a big and imporÂÂtant way of conÂÂtrolÂÂling the game and a step to makÂÂing things easÂÂier (less comÂÂpliÂÂcated menus and simÂÂpler conversations).TGB: Will X Rebirth utiÂÂlize some of the newer graphÂÂics techÂÂnoloÂÂgies such as DX11? Does DX11 present develÂÂopÂÂment chalÂÂlenges for developers?Bernd Lehahn: That’s not decided yet. X Rebirth will run on DX9 API as long as all the feaÂÂtures that we need from the API are posÂÂsiÂÂble with it. That does not mean we may not at some point also supÂÂport DX11, but for now we do not see a need. Our engine is quite difÂÂferÂÂent from all the big estabÂÂlished names, because it is designed specifÂÂiÂÂcally for a space game. We would love to use an engine like Unreal or the CryEngine, but unforÂÂtuÂÂnately we had to develop it all ourÂÂselves, because this was the only way to have cutÂÂting edge space graphics.TGB: So X Rebirth feaÂÂtures an entirely new graphÂÂics engine?Bernd Lehahn: An entirely new everyÂÂthing engine
