My first attempt at modeling...

Post by TechnicalBYTE »

Well, I just couldn't take it anymore. I'm not someone who likes to focus on one aspect of anything, especially game development, or anything related. After looking at Chebar's excellent progress, I decided I'd give it a go myself. So, off I go, download Blender, and immediately disliked every tutorial I could find. I dunno, I just don't mix well with instructions... So I just messed about with what tools I could find. I made this by simply messing about with the extrude/scale tools, and a bit of manual positioning. It took me about 30 minutes to finish, and I was wondering what you guys thought of it as a first attempt? I have zero idea where to start with texturing though. I know how to apply an image, but I don't know how to apply different textures to the window... I guess that would require a proper texture, if that's how you put it, but I'll leave that for another time...I made it up as I went along, so it's a bit out of proportion. When I have more time I'll try and make something a little more higher quality, and try and fix those annoying mistakes I only just noticed now... :? (engines are bent and I forgot to add detail...)

I think that looks great and you say that's a FIRST attempt!?! <img src="'http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_eek.gif class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Gernot (Potsmoke66) is the man you need to speak to. Check out his threads as they are packed with lots of handy hints for using Blender. But yes damn fine work there! Well done! <img src="'http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_e_smile.gif class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />It looks like a Corvette Gunship <img src="'http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_cool.gif class='bbc_emoticon' alt='8-)' />

Well to be completely honest, I did do this one at first to learn the tools a bit... but seeing I pretty much copied it off of a tutorial, I didn't really count it as "my" model. :P Do you mean Gernot's threads on this forum, or another Blender one?

Damn fine first attempt, I know my first attempts with Blender were not as good as this.

On this forum. Most of his threads are in the Pioneer section. Keep at it, you have talent! :)

Thanks guys, that means a lot! I'll have a look at the Pioneer threads too. I finished another design, my first "cap ship". Now if only I could figure out 3D game development, I could actually utalise these... :P

You can use those as 2d models as well, you would only be seeing whichever since you choose to use if I'm not mistaken.

2D models? Do you mean renders? I suppose I could use them for that game I PM'ed you about, but that's a lot of models. I'll have to set them aside till the need arises, I guess.

Excellent work Technicalbyte 8-) 8-) the only thing I would comment on in both your own models is you cockpit/bridge looks a bit large in relation to the rest of the ship.

Hi, since finding Pioneer, I have taking to learning lots of stuff lately (bit of scripting, HTML/Java etc and modelling is on my list of to dos. I also downloaded blender and do not like the video tutorials and to be honest if you "knocked" those up in 30mins I am seriously impressed. In 30 mins I have not even been able to draw 1 single solid line let alone construct a shape <img src="'http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//sad.gif class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' /> (to be fair I have zero cad/drawing experience! and a wife constantly saying "why are you doing that...?)Any chance you can post me a link to the tutorial that you have found? I may find it useful... I know gernot has lots of threads about modelling but (and if he ever reads this I apologise!) he seems to be as mad as a box of frogs and I can not understand most of what he has typed.

erm, umm....looks like i really have to gather some infos, for blender and pioneer.i'm not sure if i should keep up any of the LUA related stuff, since it's known that it will be removed.blender will also be a bit difficult, blender has changed a lot since 2.49 (which i prefere to use) the latest releases are very close to MAX (the reason why i dislike it) i don't like the clutterbars they have put in it actually, it's a bit a mess now imho. many things have been moved to places where i hardly find them.i tried to work with 2.5x (exactly because of the reason to make some guides) but it's annoying when you are common with 2.4x.but i guess i will start off right now with some basic stuff, i.e. how to setup blender for making models for games and leave other things aside.blender offers so much it can be very confusing and you can lower the filesize of a project a lot when you customize it for your needs.i guess i won't make video tutorials, because personally i feel they are not as good as something written which you can take at hand each time you need it.they changed even the keys and the way to handle the windows, of which i really don't understand why, it's horrible.i really don't like if a good software get's changed only because of a popular branded software, that makes no reason, neither MAX and even not Photoshop are ideal. but it seems everything has to be as they command it. i do had problems when switching from MAX to blender, but after a while i found it much more comfortable, now they copied MAX and it is a mess, the same tohuwabohu, things i don't need i don't like to see, i like to put them out of the view and keep as much workspace as possible. to me only this counts, workspace. the old system where certain things was only reachable with a keystroke was much better, needs a little time to learn, but after... it's like 1,2,3. i mean i don't ned the render stuff for a model in game, neither i need physics or something else, i need something plain and quick to understand.

Hiya potsmoke66, sorry I didn't reply sooner. <img src="'http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_razz.gif class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':P' />I too, hate the Blender tutorials- rather the official ones anyway. They either seemed too complex or too simple, at least for a starter. And the ones on the "wikibooks" site I just found frustrating- I doubt someone new to modelling would find it all that amazing to create a simple cube with a pyramid on top, even if you did need to start simple. The only stuff I found real useful was the GUI stuff, and even so, I do find it a bit of a mess (I still only understand bits of it).The tutorial that actually did set me off was one on Youtube... it was about creating a simple spacecraft by extruding from a single cube and the mirror function. I'm one that likes to learn on my own, which is what I did after that- it turned into those models above. I still only use those push/pull functions and a bit of manual editing though, which is primitive (I think) and creates only fairly basic shapes. I'll have to find the video again, I can't remember where it was hidden. <img src="'http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_razz.gif class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':P' />I haven't really used any other programs before, so I can't compare blender to anything. I hear Cinema 4D is good though? Pricey however... there was a reason I downloaded Blender <img src="'http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_e_smile.gif class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> .

Keep on the good work. As someone said above, perhaps the cockpit zone is too big and could be remade from scratch. It looks somewhat like a pac-man <img src="'http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_e_smile.gif class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

The upcoming version of MPL3D Solar System allows to load and configure user spaceships, to be able to pilot them around the Milky Way. No need to know programming <img src="'http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//wink3.gif class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />
