How To Target A Ship

Hi All, I am having trouble figuring out how to target ships when attacked, I know that once in my cross-hair I can press T but is there any other way of doing this as they as visible on my scanner? It takes me ages to sight them and then I press T too late. Sorry for the mundane question.

You can also click on the ship with the mouse pointer.I know it can be difficult in both ways.

You can target it with your mouse when the game is paused. If it's not in view, you can use the external views too, which can be rotated with the Numpad keys.
