Ship view ponderings

Post by Overlord »

I'm sure this has come up before, but has it been thought that you should be able to see some part of your ship from the cockpit? Like the bonnet/hood of a car. It wouldn't need to be much, but personally I think it would be good.

Yes it's been thought about but I think it's one of those things that's going to require a couple of pieces of work.Last time it was discussed on the forum it was in relation to per-ship 2D / 3D cockpits. Something like a specific per-ship 2D icon and screen layout, or a full on 3D cockpit that is again, specific to each ship. You need a separate model for a proper 3D cockpit because it has to be much higher resolution than the typical mesh that you see in game due to you being 1ft from it instead of 1000ft from it <img src="'http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_e_biggrin.gif class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />I guess it depends what people want, are willing to do the artwork / 3D modelling for, and a coder with the time to make the changes.Andy

I don't know if this is any help, but in the Flight Simulator games (FS9 & FSX), it's models have a separate cockpit folder within them with a cockpit config and images which in turn uses a central folder within the game directory itself as a resource for gauges. It works very well and it is very easy to mod a plane's cockpit in the FS games. Just dump custom gauges in the central gauges file and create a config file that positions the images and points to where the gauges are. Perhaps Pioneer might go a similar route?

well, erm, well...good idea!yes, it will cost people like me some work to make cockpits, the cockpit view we can expect soon i guess.something i would like would be a 3D cockpit where i can lay over the hud, specified with simple coordinates for position, shape of the hud or cockpit elements. shapes you won't need much for cockpit elements, three would fit for most i can imagine: triangle, quadric, circle.(i.e. four coordinates for a quadric shape, three for a triangular and centre plus x,y dimension for elliptic, circular shapes)if i take a look at iso's glffe mod, it offers a quite good solution for this, at least for glffe.just enter a few numbers and the things appear where you like them,of course in glffe it works only for the whole game and all ships wil use the same setup.really i would like to have views like this(besides this is my actual desktop for the macbook)and a proper overlayed hud, a additional clue would be working levers, means if the cockpit model could "read" inputs, e.g. if i accel so the levers will move (the levers in this example are already positioned and made in way that would allow such), but this is no must, i would be already satisfied if i could overlay the hud.the view is very limited in this example, but you will still have a camara mounted on front/back, with a standard hud.besides i can handle this ship well even with the very limited view.perhaps the cockpit view needs a view field to specify, especially depth in short range of the viewfield.---(fun) view into the MCU's rear of the cockpit

Thats the sort of thing I was thinking of yes. I imagine different styles for different types of ships etc. Would greatly increase the sense of immersion.Someone will have to do a Starbug interior though. With bits of pizza lying around and a beer can as a handle for broken lever!

slice a pizza?well, i had a coffee machine in te MCU, but i decided not to use it in the model, some might feel it's stupid, to have liquids in 0 gravity.

Looking at the door in the back of the MCU, I can't help thinking it's the door to the 'bathroom'. If I was on the ISS, I'd be thankful that there's a 0g toilet aboard, even though I'd have to drink my (and everyone else's) recycled urine. It's still better than diapers! <img src="'http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//bad.gif class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':bad:' />
