Just stumbled upon this top down sandbox spacesim. Still a bit unstable/buggy but looks promising. (hint: Java 7 is required as it's made in Java)[url]http://www.moddb.com/games/high-albedo-twisted-skies/[/url]

This dev tends to make nice projects :) I haven't played it, but seems this is no exception from first impressions :) That to sya that I've been watching this project for some time.
