Tolroko - A John carter inspired openworld game

Post by dvoid »

I want to present my pet project Tolroko. Tolroko is an openworld game in the same category as Elite etc, but everything takes place on one planet Tolroko. The world is mainly inspired by John Carter movie (barsoom books) and some Avatar. The world is procedurally generated and will contain wast deserts , moisture dripping forests, cold ice covered mountains and so on. Its an FPS game but also features flyers of different kinds. It will contain ground and air combat, trading and diplomacy. Here are some screenshots of the current progress.More info can be bound in my tigsource thread at http://forums.tigsou...p?topic=27052.0

Good luck on this project. Looks interesting. One of the areas where developers seem to get themselves derailed when working on projects like this, is they try too much to make their procedural game worlds conform to the conventions of non procedural games.I think you will be much more successful (in terms of finishing this project someday) if you make your design decisions based on the game's procedural nature. Start trying to make it into a non procedural game with some procedural "content" and you're going to create a ton of problems for yourself that you wont be able to resolve in any elegant way. Make a procedural game and design around that. Not the other way around.

Yea thats a good point, and i agree with you. Designing a game around a procedural world definetly gives you another set of problems compared to a static designed world. But it also opens up alot of possibilities especially the possibility of having a very large gameworld. Lately i have been thinking about if i should have a locked random seed, or give the player the possibility to change it. having a locked seed gives the players something incommon, and it gives me some possibility to hardcode some locations and quests. Say giving the player the ability to choose starting location between some places i know is a good starting location etc. Also you can kind of learn the world, some places you might really like , and want to come back to in another game session. Since the gameworld is so large there will always be new locations to explore anyway. What do you guys think?

Loaded up your latest build and the dessert scene I was dropped into looked good and it was vast I must have ran around for 15mins and didn't see an end in sight. It might be my gfx card or drivers but I wasn't able to get over 13fps when running around? And in the dessert these relentless rat looking things would not stop chasing me, there should be some sort of agro die off where they stop chasing after I have ran across several mountain tops :)Overall nice start and you sure picked a nice theme and even though its procedural, you still have to engage the player to keep them interested. Most people have short attention spans these days, and I would have to concur that there does need to be some static pieces in here if possible to build quests off of and things like that. But looking good dvoid and welcome to SSC.

Need to get in some other humanoid races though, so i have something to play with.About the fps, 13 sounds very low, are you on an intel card or something? I get about 40-60 on my laptop with nvidia 540M. its quite heavy on the gpu and the cpu , not done very much optimization work, and im not really planning to do that this early in development.Overall nice start and you sure picked a nice theme and even though its procedural, you still have to engage the player to keep them interested. Most people have short attention spans these days, and I would have to concur that there does need to be some static pieces in here if possible to build quests off of and things like that. But looking good dvoid and welcome to SSC.Yes , yeas no yes , aahhh yea =D of course theres suppose to be some other more engaging start of the game. Static elements would make some stuff more easy, but i might have to change some of the design for that, since the world will have to be very very very big if you cant change seed, so that theres no way you can explore it all. My current plan is to pretty much simulate the entire world at all time though in a very limited manner. like each city gets an update call now and then etc just so interesting stuff can happen to the world even if you are not there. this is not a problem if we only have like 100 cities etc, but its a problem if we have 1000000 cities ;), so i might have to rethink that part of the design, or find a way to handle it.And thanks =)

Hello, its time for a new public build. I have tested this for about 2 min, so don't expect it to be very stable ( I noticed the sound system needs some fixes etc ) http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3416639/Tolroko-0.25.exe stuff:* better AI* pirates can use flyers (but they are lousy pilots)* aim with gun, crouch etc* clouds* guns on flyers* tons of other stuff i have forgotten.

Totally forgot about Tolroko, the planet surface has gotten a lot better since my last look in 2012. If you ever need a place to host a download Dvoid feel free to upload to SSC.

Nice vid, doing a great job with the dust and smoke effects btw. Anyone familiar with John Carter books or the movie will see similarities, how hard has it been to navigate the intellectual property crap that people tend to claim when people design projects using themes or likenesses in games. Because I think your doing a great job creating what I envisioned of the books and would hate to see you derailed. I did not know you had a file service, might look into that =), using google drive is a bit lame :D Yes, just click on the downloads button at the top of the page and that brings you to the file area and there is a 'upload' button on the right.

Its no more related to John Carter then say Star Wars or Superman is etc

dvoid, it looks superb, I am really impressed with everything you've done with it. Is it your own engine or is it an engine built within another framework like Unity/UE4? Either way, brilliant job you've done.

Was able to load up your latest version yesterday and I think my machine handled ok at about 35fps and the flight is looking good for such an early state. I thought it felt a little difficult for ship to group combat in that it was hard to control the ship and target at the same time (or its just my age showing). The map showing points of interests and quest flags is a nice touch.
