Ideas for cities or planetary cities (Asimov's Trantor-like)

Started here: http://spacesimcentral.com/ssc/topic/2116-wanted-new-screenshots/?p=40287 About spiky asteroidsNeuralKernel: Off topic, but I still wonder about using some spiky terrain like this to represent larger cities or Trantor / Coruscant style worlds... fluffyfreak: No, there's much better ways :)The city code just needs... well, a lot of work. Tichy: A planet generator that creates city planets? That could be nice! ;)About cities, I had a thought. Why not generate them combining some basic blocks, like the ships of Limit Theory? In this way, we would have much variety. Another idea is to use basic blocks to generate some kind of space stations. Think about the ISS, but much more big and complex. A previous discussion about citieshttp://spacesimcentral.com/ssc/topic/3549-a-option-to-plattenbauten/?p=38372 Also, about megastructureshttp://spacesimcentral.com/ssc/topic/3096-megastructures-in-pioneer/?hl=megastructures

We already do generate each & every City uniquely actually, there's just not a lot of variety and the algorithm doesn't lend itself to being very visible ;)

I didn't know :)But what I thought was a little different: using basic blocks to generate the buildings, instead of having different kinds of complete buildings. Just like the ships of Limit Theory, that are generated (or manually assembled) from basic blocks. For ships, I think it's better to stick with models made by artists, but maybe we could do that with emormous generation ships... I think about the ships in the 'Culture' books.

There are some things that can be done right now.Duplicate the texture files, make some changes so you have a range of buildings in different styles, colour windows & walls.Next add new ".model" files using these new textures. Each ".model" file is the real model used in game, so you can re-use the existing building geometry. With a bit of work, which I'm just taking a look at you could also add some "pattern00.png", "patteron01.png" etc texture files that would add a splash of colour to each building.

Might need some work but I can certainly, um, pattern and colour the buildings... quite horrendously it turns out :D
