G.O.G. fyi

Post by Shadowma45 »

Hi as iam new to this community, I feel I owe it to everybody to advise that the gog website could be a possible security risk,I did try to purchase something online there but my credit card/debit card would not let me purchase itemsstating that site is physically located in cyprus? I found this odd to say the least, I then pressed the companythat my card is through & they advised me they had some problems w/t this site, stating that it is a security risk. Too bad looked like some reallygood deals. Also worth mentioning did try obtain a pay pal acct to circumvent this, still no dice.If i have missed something please let me know. Thanks in advance for any info. Shadowma

Probably your card company being over cautious after all GOG have been around a few years now and the internet would have been screaming about any security problems by now and according to their Wikipedia page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GOG.com their headquarters are located in Cyprus probably something to do with tax as in them not paying it. Of course you can never be too careful and you could always use a pre loaded credit card.

Cyprus has had some issues of late with the European part of the banking crisis. As Pinback notes, they could be registered in Cyprus due to taxes. Their real office is located in Warsaw, Poland. Be aware though that many credit card companies (and for ease of namecalling, including paypal) are recently often not just refusing payments with risky sites, but also economical competitors to US companies. It's not for nothing that the EU parliament has scrapped all financial data sharing treaties with the USA only 2 weeks ago. This could be related. Related blogposts:http://falkvinge.net/2013/03/20/after-cyprus-new-tolls-for-the-euro/ Official source:http://www.europarl.europa.eu/news/en/news-room/content/20131021IPR22725/html/MEPs-call-for-suspension-of-EU-US-bank-data-deal-in-response-to-NSA-snooping The EU should suspend its Terrorist Finance Tracking Program (TFTP) agreement with the US in response to the US National Security Agency's alleged tapping of EU citizens' bank data held by the Belgian company SWIFT, says a non-binding resolution voted by Parliament on Wednesday. The resolution, tabled by the S&D, ALDE and Greens/EFA groups, was passed by 280 votes to 254, with 30 abstentions.

fyi this was a visa prepaid debit card , I did file complaint w/t their executive office I think the problem may lie, with the debit card. A lot of sites do not accept debit cards, only credit. You could use a prepaid credit card, and open a paypal account with it.

I have my paypal account directly tied to my bank account. Never had any problems. Also, I got a prepaid visa card which I use to buy stuff from the USA (amazon, ebay and such) and china. Also never had problems. I do not know the ins and outs of the credit card system, but if a prepaid card works differently than a debit card, then that could be the problem yep.

Regardless, that Europarl link above is interesting regardless of this thread :P But I think we can safely assume it has not to do with GOG itself (or with visa in specific).
