Hello from Japan

Post by Grouroux »

Hello, My name is Grouroux, i'am 36, and i'am living in Japan.I'am a big fan of space games since a very long time. My favorite style is 4x, topdown space opera, and Shmup! There is some of my favorties space games : Captain Blood, Star control 1 & 2, Warpath, MoO, Space Bucks, Imperim Galactica, EV Nova, Homeworld, Mankind, SPAZ, EVE, and many more... At least, I'am also a game designer, working on a indie 4X MMO Shmup called Gangs of Space (I will introduce the game in another topic). I enjoy to join this community of space game lover ;)

Welcome to the forums Grouroux. Are space sim played in Japan I only ask as I know that the Japanese are big fans of sci-fi and video games but apart from a couple of old Playstation games I can't think of anything like the Wing Commander series or Elite type of games coming from Japan. Was just wondering if you knew of any?.

For some reason Chris Roberts was never popular there. Also, there was Star Luster (NES) and its sequel Star Ixiom but that's that. Nowadays looks like nobody cares about space/sci-fi stuff anymore unless it has giant robots or such in it.

I have project slipheed on the the 360 but I have found that it has an odd control setup almost backwards to the normal ones, the same could be said of Star Ixion which if IIRC also plays a bit like Star Raiders. Their is a number of the space battleship Yamato games but I think they are more of a tactical game than a sim and of course a huge number of 2D shoot em up, but they don't seem to have made many 3D sims type of games. StarBlade as well although it was an arcade game their was a couple of console off shoots of it.

Hi there Grouroux, I was born in Tokyo, Japan, and spent 15 years living there, although I am descended from Norway, Finland, and Switzerland. Ikebukuro, Akihabara, and the Imperial Gardens all have very fond spots in my memory, as the does the community of Musashi-Sakai off the Chuo-sen where I grew up. Some weekends we would take the train up to Mt. Takao and climb to the top. I've also been to the top of Mt. Fuji once :-). I currently spend most of my free gaming time playing Vendetta Online, which I helped contribute to and which has some Shmup aspects in an MMO environment:  id="89hScH8wOuA"> I will be sure to check out Gangs of Space, also. Are you native to Japan / is Japanese your first language?

Hi there, sorry i wasn't follow this topic, i just found the feature now ^^ Thanks for all your welcome messages. Welcome to the SSC Grouroux. You might be interested in Ur-Quan Masters HD. In anycase have fun in the forum. I follow this project for a long time, but i also had the original with Gog. Maybe I need to try again the HD version :-) (but i'am also a big pixel lover !) Are space sim played in Japan I only ask as I know that the Japanese are big fans of sci-fi and video games but apart from a couple of old Playstation games I can't think of anything like the Wing Commander series or Elite type of games coming from Japan. Was just wondering if you knew of any?. I don't know. In my city (Toyoake) it's just impossible to find any PC games, and I'am absolutely not a console player. The only 3D space sim from Japan i can remember is Star Fox. But ... look below. From my observation the three largest spacey game in Japan are X3: Terran Conflict (most popular?), Freespace 2 (a little) and Sins of a Solar Empire. For some reason Chris Roberts was never popular there. Also, there was Star Luster (NES) and its sequel Star Ixiom but that's that. Nowadays looks like nobody cares about space/sci-fi stuff anymore unless it has giant robots or such in it. The Japanese are really the masters of arcade Shmup that are mostly "space game". If after the game space to Western does not seem to be very played in Japan I think it's mostly because he currently very few players PC. Console games are severely limited by their controllers and will make good 4X is not easy. And now it's even worse, the Japanese play less on consoles and will massively on mobile. I must say, this is a disaster :-/ The other very important thing is that the Japanese do not download illegally, and don't buy digital game -they just start-. Boxed PC games are also almost impossible to find! Difficult under these conditions to know what they think of Space Games Otherwise, we had the pleasure to present Gangs of Space at the show BitSummit in Kyoto (you can read our point of view here) and to win the Excellence for Game Design Award. During these three days, many Japanese have tried the game and loved it. They were very curious, and much made the supreme effort to try to speak English with me (they usually are very afraid to speak English, but maybe with my level they had a little less scrupulous - )) After the show, we had the joy of having articles in magazines Fatmitsu, Computec and even the Nikkei Shinbun (a kind of wall street journal)! I will finish by saying that in general Japanese always amazes me with their ability to be able to get excited about something and then live their passion absolute readable manner. I'm sure when we will translate GoS in Japanese, we will encounter a small community that is passionate and very loyal. I currently spend most of my free gaming time playing Vendetta Online, which I helped contribute to and which has some Shmup aspects in an MMO environment: Are you native to Japan / is Japanese your first language? No, I'm not Japanese. I am also very bad in Japanese, much worse than English. ^^ This game intrigues me for a while, I'll have to try it. That said, for me a 3D FPS can not be a Shmup, because this is a shooter :) And to be completely honest, GoS is not a Shmup, but rather a Euroshmup.
