Looking for a sim, ~15 years old, maybe older

I played a demo of this game about 10 years ago, and I am pretty sure I played it on my since broken Macbook, but it could have been on my older PC which was stolen. Like I said, I only played a demo, so information is lacking. It was a top down game with jump points between different sections, warring factions, ability to upgrade my ship at planets and space stations, probably all typical stuff. You had the ability to name your ship and (I think) pilot. You moved the ship itself through the controls (not like FTL where you control the crew). Controls were twitchy, not text based. I recall being asked to join some faction and refusing, and then being hunted by that faction as a response. Also, on my longest run, I made it pretty far after being upgraded to some kind of psychic being type creature that did not have a physical manifestation of a ship and did not take normal upgrades. Because it was a demo, the game cut my experience short once I reached a certain point. Any ideas? Thanks!
