Anyone else made the leap to 4K?

This is a 'free for all' thread where you can discuss any games available on the PC or consoles.... yeah I guess you can include Mac.

Anyone else made the leap to 4K?

Post by TachyonicBow »

Yeah, I did it - I jumped the UHD gun - am I the only on on here behind a pixel behemoth?I can't even run games at 4K, have to downscale everything to 1920x1080, heh. That will change when I have the means to buy a GTX 970.

I haven't yet Tachyonicbow but I want too, and with the release of the 970 and 980 cards from Nvidia (and pre-existing 290X from AMD) we can do 4K resolution gaming. But will we even get the full benefit if the games don't support it or textures are not 4k? I have to admit I was at the store this past weekend and looked at some of the 4k TV's and its an amazing picture over 1920x1080. I think if the monitors/TV's come down enough in price and the gfx cards that can push it come down and this will be an upgrade for me. I know I am waiting to see what AMD's answer is to the new Nvidia based cards, because they are kick ass and but I do tend to only buy AMD whenever possible. Are there many games that support 4k resolutions?

Are we talking about PC? If yes, answer should be: Alphabetically:A: All of them.Well, some older are restricted, but most should have mods, fixes or hacks.

I've just invested a fair amount in a new system with a GTX980, but sadly, I'm not ready to buy a monitor right now. From what I've seen, 4K is far from mature right now, but I would really like to have a monitor that handles at least 1440p. I vividly remember the days back in the 90's when pretty much everything was capable of running in very high resolutions (remember CRT's were capable of doing more than 1080p [of course not that aspect ratio] for a long long time) but unbelievably, everything was optimized for 800x600. I always wondered why it took people basically until the 21st century before we were looking at UI's at normal resolutions that weren't really really tiny. I'm not particularly looking forward to going through that phase again with 4k, so for now 1440p seems like a nice middle-ground. There are also some pretty inexpensive and impressive looking AA methods around right now (most recently "Dynamic Super Resolution" from nvidia). I'm also not so keen on going to higher resolutions before the OS does a really nice job supporting it, hopefully Windows 10 will do that. I suspect in a few years from now, after I have long since graduated and moved back to New York full time I'll want to throw some money at monitors, as well as finally doing dual GPU. With any luck there will be some affordable 4k monitors with fast refresh rates by then.

ExpandingMan; If you can get a really good deal on a UHD monitor - don't pass it up, even Windows 8.1 is well optimised - the issue now and for the foreseeable future is in 3rd party program's having terrible support, the main issue here being fuzzy text. This all being said; the desktop real estate is astounding and any creative work become so much nicer - even web browsing is improved.
