Descent 8 player split-screen co-op with dxx-rebirth

Discuss all your favorite classics and retro style games in this area. The only requirement is the game has to be over 15+ yrs old to be considered a classic. Nice tool for playing these classics is DosBox.

Descent 8 player split-screen co-op with dxx-rebirth

Post by theAntiBob »

EDIT:

Turns out I may have jumped the gun on this... seems like it's just an 8 player addition to Robo-Anarchy, not real Co-Op. My apologies.

Slit screen DOES work, btw. I've tested 5player, and my "cadets" and I have played most of the game through in 3player split-screen a few times.

:EDIT

Some new features have been added to the dxx-rebirth "pre-release"
dxx-rebirth download page

Any Descent fans out there might be interested to know that 8player co-op mode has been added to the original campaign missions.

What's also interesting (and handy) is that multiple instances of dxx can be run simultaneously on the same machine.

In order to play "split-screen" style, you must assign a unique port number to all the "client" instances.
e.g. change 42424 to 42425

Of course you will have to use some sort of unique control interface for each...

0.60 beta 2 is the version i used - some depreciated config flags so you might want to rename or modify your old d1x.ini if you have one.

Been a very long time since I played Descent... I have really never tried dxx-rebirth. Is it leaps and bounds better than the original?

Dxx-rebirth is *basically* the original. Seems every effort has been made to keep the original "feel" while still taking (some) advantage of newer hardware.

If you REALLY want the old 640x480 or even 320x240 without the colored lighting effects, multisampling, anti-aliasing and transparency, you won't be able to tell the difference between dxx and original descent.

dxx-XL is the project that is HEAVILY modified to the point of being nearly a new game.

GOG is selling the Descent series again
d1,d2,d3+mercenary bundled at $20.99
