Performing a update of the forum software this weekend 2/8-2/9

Post by sscadmin »

There is a major update to the forum software and forum plugins the site uses. I don't expect too many issues... maybe theme issues, if certain settings get reset. There is also a few new features being added I might need to setup so if you see something new that's probably it :)As always before the upgrade I will lock the forums or the whole site and I will backup the database and perform the upgrade at most it will take 2hrs would be my guess. If the theme does get messed up a little that may take me a bit longer but that doesn't mess with the content/data of the site only how it looks and that won't stop the site from coming back online. I will update the site message box above the forum or this thread on the progress or issues. So during this process if you see errors or something that doesn't look right please let me know so I can try to get it fixed. The stations defenses will be down and I will need able pilots patrolling the area around the station during this maintenance so don't drink too much

Updates have been completed and a quick look through the site and everything seems to be online.... enabling station defenses. Valued mercenaries of SSC you can stand down and drinks are on the house ;)

That's when orbital mechanics are handy: you don't any need fuel to wait for the station to re-open
Thanks D1!

Hey D1 - my forum rank just jumped to Captain, but it seems to be spelt wrong (Captian).
Can't I just remain as plain old Commander Cody?

Hmm let me check the ranks and at the least fix the spelling.... and maybe I can reverse the ranks :) Would I then be a corrupt station manager if I do that? ;) because a captain is higher than a commander :)
Fixed the misspelling....

because a captain is higher than a commander

It depends. If it's an Army rank, an Army captain is lower than a Navy commander (I think the rank of commander in the Navy is equal to the rank of Colonel in the Army).

Navy Captain= Army Colonel
Commander = Lieutenant Colonel
Navy Lieutenant = Army Captain...
Yeah, I'm into stuff like this and space games...

<nods> In the days of the Roman Republic, Imperator was roughly equivalent to Commander.

Yeah the site ranks are based off the Navy.... least until I find out what the space force rank structure is then I may switch it
But if a station member is creative and wants to create some funny/unique names we can kick them around and see if they fit :) I am always flexible when it comes to this stuff.

I suggest that the first two ranks should take a leaf out the Hitch Hiker Guide to the Galaxy as in Harmless and mostly harmless and the third one could be space cadet, after that maybe some sort of mash up of ranks based on sci-fi series.

Seeing as we're primarily concerned with spaceships here, it's hard to escape a naval ranking system. Although a merchant marine ranking system might be more appropriate, that is somewhat limited (and boring).
As for the US Space Force, that'll almost certainly follow the airforce ranking system.

Hang on there guys... I don't want my next rank to be space cadet... though I've been one my whole life, lol.
You have 10 ranks here yes? let me see if we can get some mileage out of this, I'm going semi serious here but trying to keep a naval/space flavor...
