Dune The Smithee cut

Post by Pinback »

Really surprised to see this DVD in a second hand shop as I had no idea that this extended tv version was on DVD.
If you not familiar with this version then it's basically a tv version which was shown on American tv in the 80s and added about half an hours of new scenes and reedited or reused others from the film. It also added a new prologue and some other narration throughout the film, Lynch was so annoyed by theses changes that he had his name removed and replaced by Alan Smithee as the director of the film.
Not the best transfer to DVD as looks like a home VHS recording also it's a pan and scan version of the film, so no widescreen and Dune looses a lot when it's not shown in widescreen.

I didn't know that existed or just don't remember there being a extended version of the Dune movie. Its been so long since I have seen the original, still need to see the remake of Dune.

it's an interesting version of the film and I can remember reading about in Cinefantastique back in the late 80s and thinking probably never see that here.
I would not recommend anyone rushing of to eBay or Amazon to buy it, but if you find it cheap then worth a look as a bit of a curiosity.

The Smithee Cut of Dune is an unofficial fan edit of the 1984 film Dune, created by film editor Alan Smithee. It was released in 2003 and is available for free online. The Smithee Cut is an attempt to make the film more faithful to the original novel by Frank Herbert, as well as to make it more accessible to modern audiences. The Smithee Cut features a new score, new special effects, and a re-edited narrative. It is considered to be a more faithful adaptation of the novel than the original film.
