Cell Sword

Post by classyk »

Hi everyone,
I had a lot of fun making Liberation and I've recently fallen in love with 6DoF (six-degrees-of-freedom) games so I've decided to make a little one.
It's called "Cell Sword" and it's similar to Descent but set inside the human body. The pitch is that in the future, war has left the world polluted with microscopic drones (called "Rust") that get into the bloodstream and consume the host's lifeforce. The rich hire gamers to remotely pilot ships to blast the Rust.
So far I have an early look at it video but that's about it.

If you're a 6DoF fan (Descent, Zerograve, Desecrators, Overload, etc), I'd love your suggestions!

I'm wondering if it's too niche at the moment lol

Hey @classyk
This could be a great game if you really stick to the theme and do some research behind all the nasty things that you can run into at a microscopic level inside the body and maybe using the positive things inside the body as enhancements/powerups as you play depending on where you are in the body.... kinda like free-roaming but inside the body. And maybe the human that you are in if they do things like consuming food/drink, coughing, sneezing, falling and going to the bathroom could all be events that could be made serious or funny. Use your imagination :)

This is coming together pretty quickly. I'm trying to really lean into the body stuff as you suggest (I think people who like the idea always mention the nasty things inside the body lol) but I feel a bit limited by my blender skills!

Have totally lost the thread on this one at the moment. I put a demo together. I like it but I'm heading into the end of the year and looking forward to a break

Still plugging away at Cell Sword. I wish I had done a cockpit view instead of 3rd person but I live and learn. Making a 6DOF game is surprisingly hard! Have big new respect for the genre and the classics.

It's a (hopefully) standard WASD + mouse combo. Also works with gamepads. The controls are remappable and I've added a preset that mimics Descent as much as possible. The Descent inputs are very different! I don't think any game has used them in about 20 years. I guess we standardised on WASD at some point.

The W,A,S,D controls works great in a small level, like the Everspace game but it's a complete fail in more open world space games like Spacebourn.

Cell Sword is finished and launches 18 June 2025! It's been interesting doing a deep dive on 6DOF games and I hope Cell Sword delivers on being a fun and accessible homage to the genre!
If any SpaceSimCentral folk want a code, DM me! I love hanging out here.
