GameDev.net Q&A with Flavien Brebion

Post by sscadmin »

GameDev.net has a nice interview with Flavien Brebion the lead programmer on Infinity. It's a bit lengthy but discusses a lot about the process of getting Infinity off the ground and to the state it is in now. Not too many secrets about the game are released in this Q&A but it is still a good read.http://www.gamedev.net/reference/business/features/spotlightFB/

Have read it to.For a small team or one man team procedural is the way to go. To fill a universe it's almost a no brainer.Might be the win can be high but it more difficult road. While the conventional is a routined but much more workloaded road to travel. But it's a MMO not my thing. But looks like they put procedural to the next level.

I don't know SuperG you might want to give Infinity a try when we have the opportunity to get into a Alpha or Beta. Because in my opinion Infinity will be the closest thing you will get to an Elite4 if you are a fan of that series. The procedural planets and universe screenshots I have seen are amazing and cannot wait to be a part of this one.I am amazed that all this is being programmed by one personal mainly  But I do like the fact that general game direction is fueled by the community and Inifinity won't be pushed out the door for $$ of a publisher.

In my opinion Infinity WILL be one of the best looking games out there when it will be released. The fact that the community has a major input in the game says enough. Hundreds of models are done by normal guys like you and me and donated to the game ... good models, original looking spaceship and all sorts of other stuff. If I weren't so busy with my own project I'd do a few models for Infinity also. This is a great game ! Just look at their trailers and pics and stuff, looks and feels better than EVE in some parts, and considering it is still far from finished, that says a lot.

I think that along SolCommand will be the biggest reason why Infinity will be a success. The community has so much input and help with the look/feel. This just builds die hard fans and the fans in their own way make the game they want to have and see. The I-Novae engine is great and we probably haven't seen anything yet :) I can't wait to see what 2010 brings and maybe, just maybe we might see an Alpha build.

Outstanding that they will big 3d planets in the game :D ,its one of the few things I like about the xgames.I think they may be making a mistake by not including the ability for the player to get out of the cockpit and walk around the station and space ports.Flavien has giving good reasons for not doing it,but as both Eve and BP will include this feature at some point. They should consider codeing the ability to do this into the game,to be used at a later date.

I know a big portion of MMO's is there social component and with the sheer size of Infinity it might be a real benefit to have at least avatars that you can move and communicate with inside the largest of stations. On planet surfaces I could see not doing this because of the strain on the resources when you have millions of planets. From a lot of descriptions there will really be no planet life so really no need to get out of ship if your just scanning for mineral deposits to mine.

Atm I'm happy enough with the fact that you can fly on planet surfaces which are so detailed, but indeed adding the "walk-in-station" feature would be a bonus that would raise interest throughout the sci-fi gaming community. We shall see what the future holds ;)
