Avatar is coming soon
Well the 18th is almost here and that's when James Camaron's epic movie Avatar comes out to the masses. I am looking forward to watching this and is almost a automatic BluRay purchase when it is available. Not sure if i'll see this in I-Max because last time I saw a movie in one I got a headache. The story reminds me of a good movie I saw a few weeks ago 'Battle for Terra'.But checkout the latest extended trailer here that really gives you an idea what the movie is about.

Pinback now what is wrong with the Thundercats? One of my beloved cartoons when I was a youngster. The visuals look great but I think the story will be a good one if it is like Battle for Terra. BFT story is humans basically destroy all of Earths resources and the human race is in this big ship and travels through the universe looking for a suitable planet to colonize. They come across Terra and they battle with the home species, I liked this animated movie a lot and definitely worth a watch (especially on blu-ray).

Nothing wrong with Thundercats.
But every time I see the blue moggys from Avatar I now think of Thundercats, when I see the film I willexpect now to see munra in it.
(in 3d)

I love the mech and gunship designs. The story reminds me of Fern Gully in a way.
RE: Avatar is coming soon
I got a laugh from some of the complaints of the movie in I-Max theaters that people are feeling sick/headaches during the viewing. I try not to go to I-Max anymore because I get headaches trying to take in that big ass screen.Totally forgot about Fern Gully it does kinda have the same premise.

Saw it today. Wasn't anything special. I can't really put my finger on why I didn't care for it (I hate it when that happens) though. Some nice eye candy for sci-fi fans I suppose, though the coolest looking stuff weren't even the sci-fi elements, it was the forest & environment actually. They created a truly beautiful world. One specific issue that I can point to however is the story was painfully predictable & cliche. All that said, however, remember; it IS a sci-fi movie afterall so everyone who would register on a forum like SSC is bound to enjoy the film or at least be entertained by it on some level.

I wanted to see it in the theater maybe during the Xmas break if not I will buy it on Blu-Ray when it is released. I think movies make a ton of money on dvd/bluray sales and I think they put to much worth on the opening weekend anyway.

Well I saw it, and it seemed rather bland. Nothing new as far as story-writing goes. Same ol' same ol' "Dances with Smurfs" kinda theme. The plot had way too many holes in it and the theme seemed to be overtly political. Indigenous tree-huggers and naive eco-friendly scientists against evil corporate military profit seekers. That story has been done to death..

Anyone see it in the I-Max have any comments on the 3D?

Oh the 3D effects were awesome. It had a really good visual style to it. I just wish they would've spent as much time and money on the writing that they did with the effects. I basically had the whole movie figured out 20 minutes into it.

Would have like to see it the imax but its fully booked till the middle of jan looks like I will have to make do with the local flea pit.

Yeah, soon as I saw the Joe Buzz-cut hardcore pissed off military guy with an attitude I pretty much knew where this was headed.
RE: Avatar is coming soon
Well I just got around to seeing Avatar,Hugely Impressed by the 3d tec,
I more then once found myself trying to swip something away from my field of vision
. And the awesome cgi Navi and Pandora, although Pandora some time looked like a set from a Doug McClure film.
Have to agree with others though the story was soso, very much a scifi Westeren reminded me of A Man Called Horse/Dances with Wolves .Can't wait to see this 3d tec come to gameing.

I for one loved the movie. The scenery was fantastic and the story was good enough. I'd rate it a 9/10 for sure.
RE: Avatar is coming soon
I probably won't have the chance to see it in the theater but I will definitely buy it on Blu-Ray when it comes out. Any movie that causes talk of suicide because they watch and see how beautiful Pandora is and then they leave the movie theater and say "OMG my life sucks compared to the Navi" has to be worth a watch. If you pay attention to the news around the movie several people have died. Wish I could watch it in 3D but I would probably leave with a massive headache. I'll be happy when we can watch 3D movies without glasses.
RE: Avatar is coming soon
If you can D1 go see it in 3d this not the old red/green filter glasses system, but a clear one. This is an event film like StarWars or Jurassic Park.you wont get the same impact watching it on DVD with out the 3d.

That makes sense to me, Pinback. I saw it in 2D and the graphics struck me as being a little bit odd, as though something was not quite the way that it was intended. That was probably the lack of 3D. Don't get me wrong, Avatar looks like the best quality computer game ever, even in 2D. Because the movie is what it is, I will try to see it again at a 3D iMax theatre. And don't hold your breath waiting for this tech on your PC... I am sure that it was not rendered in real time. It would suck on today's PCs... but there is always "tomorrow" (or a few more years)! And, yes, Darkone, Avatar is definitely worth a watch. Without question. As Shant and Shingen said, the story is not going to rock you, but the way in which the story is told is truly magnificent. It's like Myst with "people"... sort of.

I saw this just before Christmas. Utterly amazing to watch. Being the cynical type I totally thought the 3D thing would be a cheap gimmick but it actually blew me away....and that was just in the adverts before the film started! The film itself was amazing. I love Sigourney Weaver, and seeig her as a 9ft tall blue alien woman was an incredible thrill. The story wasn't bad, either. A touch predictable, but beautifully presented and completely engrossing. I want to take my Mum to see it - I'm sure she'll love it!

I had a look at a bit of the film without the glasses and was surprised to see it looked like a normal film just a bit out of focus in places. But if can see it in 3D.
