public beta testing of patches

Post by Pinback »

Just seen this on the X forum http://forum.egosoft.com/viewtopic.php?t=352790 so if you want to get involved then follow the links. Public Beta testing of X Rebirth updates and patchesIn order to test updates and patches for X Rebirth more thoroughly, we have decided to open up our Beta testing to anyone who wants to get involved. If you would like to help us test our forthcoming patches (and don't mind backing up your savegames in case things don't go according to plan!) then please head over to our new X Rebirth - Patch Public Beta forum, where you will find details on how to join the Beta program and report any problems you find.In the short term, until the Christmas break, we plan to operate a roughly weekly patch cycle, with patches being made available for public Beta testing towards the end of the week, and the full release following early the next week if all goes well. As we move away from urgent bug-fixing and on to improving performance, fixing gameplay issues and adding new features, the length of this cycle will of course increase, with more time being allowed between the Beta and full release.

This is a very good move for them, it gets the players involved in the gameplay and ability to give feedback. And as the patches improved the game more good press should help the game sales for them. They should have had a larger beta phase, you would think all these issues the people are complaining about would have been seen by the testers? I looked at X:R as having no competition until Elite came out so they had time to fix issues and do performance tweaking there should have been no rush on getting this out before Xmas.

Great, so they've managed to utilize more than 90% of my GPU... and it still runs at the same framerate it did before. That really does not bode well. So I was reading this article they had in PC Gamer, they had built basically the most expensive possible gaming PC with 4 of the new GeForce Titan (or 780 Ti, whichever was newer). They called it the "Large Pixel Collider", I guess it is a spoof on the LHC. Bet it would run X Rebirth at like 10 FPS. I would get so much amusement out of running X Rebirth on that machine. Well Egosoft, it's a standing invitation, no matter how bad it is, if you ever get above a solid 40 FPS I will nonetheless spend many hours playing your game.

Wonder if it could also be gfx card driver related as well? I'm just not used to seeing or hearing of games performing so badly especially ones that have been in development for years. You would think someone would have come across performance issues and it would have been a great oversight to not test with the minimum spec machine to see performance as well.

Clearly a GFX card issue on Expandingman's side too (or Egosoft not having done their optimization well). I have hardware which in theory should not even be able to boot X:R up. And it does and runs it fine. My biggest 2 complaints still standing are the GUI parts lacking for trade orders and the lack of feedback in much stuff, especially many storyline parts.
