Looking for an early, realtime 3D space-shooter

Post by artician »

Hello, I'm new. I was hoping there were some other old-schoolers here that could help me identify a game from ~25 years ago. The description is at the bottom, but first: It is not the following:Terminal VelocityFury3HellbenderElite 1 or 2Wingcommander (any)BattlezoneArcticfoxStellar 7 (any)Nova 9Carrier CommandDescent (any)RadixInca (any)Star Wars arcade (any)Any game set in history or reality (no Strike commanders or similar)... I'm sure I forgot some. It was on at least one of the following systems (I wish I could remember which I played it on):Atari STApple IIeDOS It was definitely not an Amiga game. The game was an early 3D space shooter, and it would have been released between 1988 and 1994 at the latest. Its visuals were rudamentary polygons, more along the lines of Elite 2 or Arctic Fox (flat shading, probably no textures at all).In the game you flew around a polygonal environment shooting at things and getting shot at. I believe there were towers that would shoot at you, and I think there were tunnels that you could fly down (similar to Terminal Velocity), and they would bring you out somewhere else in the level/on the planet.I am not 100% certain, but the planet *might* have been a whole sphere, or at least simulated the curvature of a planet.I think I downloaded the demo for it from an early BBS. Anyway, that is literally all I can remember, other than crashing into the ground a lot. ;) I appreciate any insight people might share. Thank you!

Starglider fits the bill but the game also appeared on the Amiga.

X-Wing ? "DOS" --> check"flat shading, probably no textures at all" --> check" it would have been released between 1988 and 1994 at the latest" --> check" there were towers that would shoot at you, and I think there were tunnels that you could fly down" -> check (training mode)

Ach, this is great. I was a little dismayed I didn't get replies right away. I blame my impatience. You've given me a couple leads though! Hardwar was definitely not it. My family didn't get a PC until 94, and the game I'm thinking of I saw at least 3-5 years before this, when I was in my tweens. It was a friends house, which is why I coudln't remember the system it was on. It definitely could be Inferno or Starglider 2. I will have to nab them offline and play to see. The memory is so hazy. From the screenshots they fit the bill, but I also remember flying up to higher altitudes and having a real sense of freedom (like you did on planet surfaces in Epic 2, though closer to the restraints of Terminal Velocity since you could not exit the planet). I knew I was missing some big games. I should have known I missed X-wing and Tie Fighter. Those of course were not the game, (but god, weren't they amazing in their day?) :) Thank you all for the suggestions, and please keep them coming if you think of anything else! I am extremely happy to have a new resource to help me mine my own memories. :)

Fantastic. I am 99% certain that the game I was looking for was Starglider 2. Seeing the title screen immediately slapped my memory to life, and then the HUD with it's pseudo-holographic display sealed the deal. Thank you all so much for your answers and help.
