Hey that looks quite frantic! 
I like the idea of the box in the centre of the screen, maybe look this one out for the C64 Forever emulator. Now if it just had Defender's lasers!

Looking at some of the other vids on Youtube is seems a paddle was needed to play the game rather than a joystick.
