To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

Cannot open as archive - Win 8

Hi guys,

New recruit here! Signed up to SSC so I could download the FFED3D.

I'm trying to open the FFED3D archives, tried both the complete and the multipart ones but I always get an error from 7Zip:

"Cannot open file FFED3D_Complete.7z as an archive"

I'm an early adopter of Win 8 so I'm wondering if that might be the problem, although my installation of 7zip seems to open other zip archives just fine.

Any ideas?

This won't be much of a help, but that's what I found:

Quote:

Why can't 7-Zip open some ZIP archives?

In 99% of these cases it means that the archive contains incorrect headers. Other ZIP programs can open some archives with incorrect headers, since these programs just ignore errors.

If you have such archive, please don't call the 7-Zip developers about it. Instead try to find the program that was used to create the archive and inform the developers of that program that their software is not ZIP-compatible.

There are also some ZIP archives that were encoded with methods unsupported by 7-Zip, for example, WAVPack (WinZip).

maybe some of the parts got corrupted? maybe you missed one of the parts and didn't download it?

Yes I would guess that is the more likely cause. Did you try downloading the 4 part version elneilios?

Oh, and welcome to the SSC! <img src="' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//girl_crazy.gi f"' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':girlcrazy:' />

Thanks for the replies guys, I didn't notice them because I didn't get notified like I thought I would! Yeah I tried both versions but with no luck. Will try it on my Win7 machine and see if it makes any difference. Once I have the files, do you have any advice on the best way to run it? DosBOX?

Hi elneilios

There might be issues with the download section. Darkone (the site admin) has been investigating. In the meantime he set up this alternative download page, so try this http://spacesimcentral.com/directdl/

If that fails, try the Russian site here http://www.elite-games.ru/conference/viewtopic.php?t=50657

I got it working on my Win 7 machine! Archives opened fine, so perhaps they were just corrupted on my Win 8 machine, as was suggested. One strange issue I've found is that I can't click on the buttons within the station's comm link. If I use the shortcut icons on the HUD (or the F keys) then it's ok in the sub menu.

Thanks for the helps guys, going to have some fun bounty hunting now! <img src="' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_razz.gi f"' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-P' />

Hi Elneilios

Glad you were able to extract FFED3D ok. Did you re-download or did you just copy it from your WIn8 machine? I don't have Win8 (and probably won't for a while) and not sure how 7zip archives do on Win8, shouldn't be an issue I know but you never know.

Windows 8 has some oddities, I think - a fellow Ooliteer had troubles with a corrupted save-game under Win 8!
