To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

39 Days to Mars is a mix of puzzle-adventure and resource management. You play as Sir Albert Wickes and The Right Honourable Clarence Baxter, two 18th century explorers who have been chosen to pilot the HMS Fearful on its maiden voyage to Mars. This spaceship is the pinacle of victorian engineering, designed by the brightest minds of the age. However, Albert and Baxter are not the brightest anything, and are both eminently unqualified to be piloting a spaceship.

You must keep the two explorers alive through the trip by attending to their needs, while at the same time keeping the ship from falling apart and solving the problems that arise. It's fairly clear that steam power is not the most reliable option for interstellar transportation.

39 Days to Mars is a coffee-break game. The individual activities and clear in-game days make it perfect for playing in short sessions. With two lead characters it's possible to play co-operatively with a friend. There's a mix of action and at an estimated 20 minutes per expedition the game won't wear you out, leaving you fresh for a new adventure ...

Most of the game is set in the HMS Fearful. To survive the trip to Mars, Albert and Baxter need to regularly eat, sleep, and amuse themselves (so as not to die of boredom). This would be easier if the fire hadn't run out of coal and if bedsprings weren't so squeaky. The Mechanical Navigation Computer has got a virus, the Interstellar Transport Engine is low on fuel, and Baxter snores. It will take all of your talents and a little bit of good luck to get both pilots to Mars in one piece.

I'm currently drawing the artwork, designing the resource system, and writing and recording the dialogue. I hope to create a strong "romantic age of steam travel" feeling as you play the game. With the graphics and dialogue coming together I'm pretty excited about it!

Update.

I'd like to thank everyone who's backed 39 Days to Mars so far! I really appreciate your support, your interest, and your comments about the game. It's going to be an exciting journey.

39 Days to Mars can be divided into three main gameplay types: survival, puzzle, and adventure.

Survival is similar to a resource management style game. Each character has basic needs such as hunger and boredom that must be attended to throughout the game. This becomes harder as the game progresses because things in the ship break down. Fixing these is done via minigames and puzzles, which increase in difficulty as the game progresses.

Can I Play Solo?

Yes! You can switch between characters and complete parts of the puzzles independently. The difficulty of the game will be adjusted to support this.

Is there network play?

No. 39 Days to Mars is designed to be a single-screen co-op experience. If the stretch goals are met then this will be the case across PC, Mac, Linux, Ouya, XBOX and the iPad. Small mobile devices will be either hot-seat or face to face split-screen.

Is there replayability?

Yes and No. The story itself won't change between retellings, however the puzzles and frequency of problems can and will be adjusted to change the difficulty and the experience each time.

These graphics don't look like the ones in your pitch video.

They will, in time! 39 Days to Mars is still in a very early stage of development. The videos and images here are to demonstrate some gameplay and do not reflect the final look and feel of the game! Everything may (and probably will) change for the better.

Each character has basic needs such as hunger and boredom that must be attended to throughout the game. This adds an element of time pressure to the mission, and means that characters must co-ordinate with each other to be properly rested and sated before attempting any of the minigames or puzzles.

As the ship gets closer to Mars, the rate of problems increases. The more things break down, the more efficient you have to be at fixing them otherwise you run out of time and Albert and Baxter will die. This is inconvenient.

Game been funded now and still has 25 days to run, will be interesting to see how much they can pull in although their top stretch goal is only $4000.

39 days to Mars is going for Steam Greenlight.

39 Days to Mars is now listed on Steam Greenlight. If you'd like to see the game distrubited on Steam, please head over there now and vote for it

What if I want a DRM-free version? Don't fret! I'll also be releasing a stand-alone version that you can buy.

What happens if I'm a Kickstarter Backer?

If 39 Days to Mars becomes available on Steam, you'll get a steam key for the game. If you don't use Steam, you'll also be able to download a DRM-free version directly.

Does this mean the game's almost finished?

No, sorry. The release is still scheduled for 2015.
