To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

New XCOM game... your thoughts

I know most of you played the X-Com games and its a shame they haven't resurrected the franchise again, or have they?

I came across this trailer and i really don't know what to think yet. They are giving the game more of a FPS style than a strategy. From the trailer the game looks like it has a decent story but wonder if it could have any lasting gameplay like the originals had.

I suppose Darkone that it will depend on how much strategy is actually left in the game. The guy in the video mentioned that you take what you find back to your base. This may mean you get to research upgrades in weaponry, armour and other support utilities. If it lacks this, then we would be looking at a straight (although with pretty graphics) shooting game. It's always a bit of a dilemma when a developer takes on a new iteration of a classic game series. Bethesta faced this with Fallout 3 as will Square Enix with Deus Ex 3. How much of the previous games features will survive? Time will tell I guess 🙄 Shame it's just on the Xbox though 😐

No its on the Xbox 360 and the PC so your in luck 🙂

Now that you put it that way, yes it is great for devs to think outside the box every once in a while and if they can pull it off they will have a hit like Fallout 3. But if you do it wrong .... I guess I won't pass too much judgment on XCOM until I see a bit more gameplay. The game I hope that does pull from the original from is Deus Ex, if they do that game right it will be game of the year. But in XCOM I did like the story of you being an investigator into strange happenings and you see this stuff unfold and your like an agent like MiB movie. We'll see, it does have a nice concept I just hope they put in a lot of the original style and gameplay of the X-Com games into this game.

Haha the air masks are dropping from the upper compartment for you right now Pinback... breath slowly into the mask 🙂

That was my first reaction as well when I saw the title and that they are basing the game off of the originals. Geraldine does have a point maybe.... just maybe they might do it right. If not, only see it being a hit on Xbox because the older PC gamers will stand clear of it if they ever played the original.

I know, I know. I felt the same thing when Fallout 3 was realised and was pleasantly surprised, but lets see what they come out with. Good that it will be on the PC too, but another worry, will it be a console port to PC or the other way around? 🙄

Oh 2.3 is officially out now... nice. They have been working on that for a while. That game is definitely worth a try if you like the old X-Com which I think you do by the equipment check you had a bit ago Pinback 😉

And you could just compile the source and play from that as well so your always current.

Mmmmm, I am going to give this a try. Thanks for mentioning it Farcodev 😉 I bought UFO Aftermath and although it was ok, I still felt it lacked something that a Gallop Bros creation would have had. What that something is, I am not so sure about. Atmosphere maybe or perhaps the ease you could add your own sound effects? I remember changing all the sound files on my Amiga version of UFO :Enemy Unknown, with effects from cartoons like Daffy Duck to samples from Father Ted, (apologies to readers outside the UK who have never heard of this comedy series) and a load of other crazy stuff. I think I might still have those files somewhere on my dead Amiga 4000's hard drive , I wonder.............no! 😳 😆

Yes, well everyone who played though it was pretty funny! 😀 I did the same thing with Worms Directors Cut too, even some Beatles, George Sanders (Old Brit Actor) and even Vincent Price got a look in for that one. I must have been very board back then or had too much time on my hands! 😀 And yes Pinback, I did notice your Amiga post and yes of course I just *had* to put my demented thoughts down too 😆

Interview with the devs of the new X Com game on RPS.

Would not call this a reboot as it’s X com only in the name as it appears to have no connections with the old games.

This isn't X-Com at all; it's most mindless FPS crap for all of the new FPS fanboys (no offense, I enjoy some FPS, but IMO the genre is becoming nothing but a bunch of stale clones, that and X-Com is supposed to be about strategy!). I'll stick to UFO: AI (can't wait for 2.4 stable!).

It seems to have little or no connection with the original game and the name just being used as a marketing device.

But you never know it might turn out to be good game in its own right just a pity they attached the Xcom name to it.

agreed. i raged. its a turnbased strategy, a deep one at that. they really cheesed it up. i was hoping there would be some kind of strategy brought back. but nooo.

ps, the opensource version of UFO is freakin sweet. was able to download and play it in afganistan. kept me busy.

Thought I would revisit this thread with news of another XCom game. This time its Civvy's creators Firaxis, who are involved. They aim to do a proper remake of the original game with all the strategy aspects intact. Here have a look,.....

Great vid Pinback! 🙂 I was watching it very closely and I am happy to say it ticks all the boxes. That kill cam will be great and defending that base will be interesting as you could build it with hostile incursions in mind, have built in kill zones. Looking at the vid, I remember when you took one of these "no chance" shots in the original, when it came off and you got that reassuring yelp, grunt or (insert mad death sound here) from the aliens, it felt great 😎

When this comes out you can keep Mass Effect! 😆

Hope there a lot of destroyable bits in the level always remember my first terror town attack and firing at an alien in the petrol station.

Hit one of the pumps and the whole station goes bang alone with the alien and half my squad. ”RELOAD” 😆

Oh yes "secondaries" could be lethal, especially so with Blaster Launchers in use! 😎

I take no responsibility if watching the vid below makes you want to fire it up again 😆
