To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

Nox Imperii - Escape Velocity-style OS game in a semi-random Galaxy

Hi guys,

I'm looking for testers for a new attempt at the "successor to Escape Velocity" genre. It's a fork of Naev, with a few key differences:

- Mostly-random Galaxy that rewards exploring

- Different universe, with a more focused narrative

- Dynamic economy, affected by trading and missions

More infos and the download links are on the website:  http://noximperii.com/

It's available for Windows and Linux right now, for OS X as soon as I sort out some build issues.

I'd love some reports, here or in the NI forums!

Thanks

Random world filled with weird natives:

Exploration system for far-away worlds:

An almost infinite Galaxy to explore (though admittedly it gets pretty empty if you travel too far):

And the "usual" EV-style space combat:

Downloaded, I hope I can give it a try this week sometime.

The screenshots look good and I am glad someone is working off of the Naev engine would be nice to see that completed someday, but maybe you can be the first one to put out a solid game using it. So I hope your efforts on Nox Imperii keep going strong because your headed in the right direction.

Have you tried Endless Sky? I've always felt like Naev was pretty limited, especially with its glacial development, and you could really do some cool things with Endless' Sky's modding capabilities. It helps that its still being actively developed and patched, and its much closer to the original EV Nova than Naev ever was.

Just an idea. As a potential player, I don't see why I should give up Endless Sky. 🙂

I have tried Endless Sky, and it's a very cool game. Not really what I want to do with Nox, though. Nobody's asking you to give it up in any case, you can always try both 😉

I picked Naev and not Endless Sky as a base because it was closer to what I wanted and easier to modify in-depth (not just mod). I don't think I could have done a real dynamic Galaxy in Endless Sky for instance. Also, graphics-wise Endless Sky's choice of having each ship be a single rotated sprite coloured by faction make ships look too monotonous for my taste (the UI itself however definitely looks better than Naev or Nox, that I agree). I'm also not keen on ES' very arcade, fast-paced combat, though that's something that would probably have been modable.

Regarding development speed, you are sadly right for Naev itself, but for Nox, if you check my development thread you'll see that it's quite active:  https://forum.naev.org/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=1023 (versions 0.2 to 0.5.1 were released within the past 8 months).
