To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

I've been encouraged by the admin to post here and tell you about the game I'm developing, called "Space Exploration: Serpens Sector". As the title states, it's a space exploration RPG, in the vein of Star Control, though on a smaller scale.

Though the game isn't done yet, I occasionally release preview versions to get feedback from the public. Once complete, I intend to release the game itself for free, and sell a sizeable expansion pack that contains extra events. (I talk about the reasoning behind this in this post: http://www.metalbeetle.com/spaceexploration/index.php?newsid=10 .

I've put in a screenshow below, so you can see what it looks like at the moment, though things are likely to still change a bit between now and the final version. You can download the preview from http://www.metalbeetle.com/spaceexploration/ .

Thanks MetalBeetle.

I would recommend everyone try this game out and give feedback suggestions because it is coming along nicely. the exploration piece is pretty solid thus far, managing fuel, crew and resources. Combat needs a bit more attention but it is still in beta. The game also reminds me a lot of Starflight games. I was able to complete the demo on my first go around.

Couple things I have been wondering are:

- Will our crew gain experience and get better in skills as they are used?

- Will there be any way to mod the game or add our own content (missions/story)?

- Any claiming/ownership of planets, stations or more than one ship?

Keep up the great work MetalBeetle.

Here is a small update on the status of Space Exploration: Serpens Sector from the developers website:

2009-09-13: What I'm working on

I'm currently working on the new combat mode for dev 10, which will feature planets, asteroids, upgraded graphics, upgraded ship AI, and some other things. As so often happens, things are taking than originally planned, so it's going to be a while yet before dev 10 is ready.

For example, the ship AI currently turns my laptop into a space heater when it runs, a consequence of exploring and comparing the effects of thousands of courses of actions. This will get improved before the release.

But rest assured that I am hard at work - other things just have a habit of eating into my time. For now, have a look at these screenshots of the new combat. Things are liable to still change around a bit, but if you have questions or comments, do visit the forum.

I remember testing this game out sometime ago. Even sent the dev an email about some of the problems. Nice to see its still alive.

Well looks like Metal Beetle has released their next dev version of Space Exploration (dev 10). There are some obvious updates to the game that I noticed right away is the combat system is different and has some nice features to it like hacking, and getting crew members advise on the enemy ship and its systems, you can use planets for cover and I like some of the explorations quests as well. And of course the music is a nice touch 🙂

Play a Medium game or above to be able to select your own crew members and see what you get for a score. Go and try out the game and download it here: http://www.metalbeetle.com/spaceexploration/ and it is multi-platform too.

Oh hey, new version!

Was unaware it was a multiplatform game as well. Will give it another shot. 🙂

Got a score of 219 the other day and you need a little luck sometimes to get higher scores.

Here is a small quote from the authors blog, so it still looks like it is under development.

Working on the new SE:SS. Frankly, it's increasingly looking like only the graphics and sound will survive from the old version, and I might also ditch the combat mode as an overcomplication. On the plus side, it's really coming together.
