To all SSC Station occupants
Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.
Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

I know I haven't been around much lately but I been a little busy working on something..... I been trying to make a game. Right now its more web based because I do want to eventually have it running on SSC for all to enjoy. The inspirations for this one is old BBS door games like Tradewars 2002 and Yankee Trader. I been working on this for a month now and its starting to shape itself into a nice game ... right now its only single player (mainly for testing purposes). Yeah its simplistic I know π
During this time I also even have a small prototype of tradewars running via web browser using node.js... so I been playing around mainly (also converted my PC over to Linux only now too). I hope by the end of July I might have something ready for a Cosmic Trader play test and get recommendations and thoughts on functionality from everyone.Β
Right now working on planet stuff (mining, invading, destroying, claiming, colonization). I need to do a little more work on combat, want to introduce different weapons and have the ships computer systems/scanners really assist or not assist you in your fight. I have basic hacking and stealing from ports, navigational hazards, the npc they actually progress while your playing they will battle each other... so the mechanics are growing π
I never really thought about what really goes into a game until now.... wow so many thoughts and then thinking how to best implement something so it makes sense or its comical etc... I been having fun with it. I just got done with the 'power ranking' system, its simplistic but I will know more if its working right if I play a while to see if the factions grow in power or individual npc's grow as well. I have yet to introduce a exp/alignment system its on the TO DO list. Right now its the basics I am concentrating on the navigation/movement, port trading, combat and planet actions. Once I know those are working well I will start fine tuning and adding small pieces.
But its a start, I haven't done this all on my own I have had AI assist me a lot too.
Nice one D1 you will have to get some video of it if you can. 😎Β
If I can stay on task (which is hard sometimes cause all my adult kids are still here... hehe dad's job is never done) I hope to have all the basic 'functional' pieces completed. Only thing I need to figure out is the multiplayer or at a minimum if I have it still as a single player game while I work on multiplayer is converting it all to use a database etc... So there is some work ahead, maybe at the end of the month I will see if its at a good point for a video.
