To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

Infinity: TQFE New Pre-Alpha Tech Demo Video

You have to watch this and check out all the work compared to the first video we saw about 2 years ago. Flavien Brebion and and the rest of the team and the community are doing a great job on Infinity and hope to see it progress into a Alpha hopefully sometime this year. So enjoy the show (watch in HD) and please post your thoughts.

Couple of things I loved about the videos:

- Love the visuals of flight on the planet (right around 8:07 in the first video is awesome)

- Did you see them clicking on random stars and getting the distance in LY .... that just shows the vastness of Infinity

- The planet rings were great and you can fly through them 🙂

- Inside the ships cockpit looked really good, can't wait to see those instruments working and moving.

Awesome

I think Infinity is going to scratch that itch that a lot people have had for a long time. 😀

love the abilty to pick the stars in the main view, good to see some different planet types

and hope we will see some weather effects on them.Would like to know if you vist a waterworld

will you be able to go under the water.

Really shows up how far behind the curve Egosoft are with the Xgames.

Why Farcodev? This game will be so vast that if you fly off into space, you might not even see another player for a while so it will be almost like a single player game at times. I want to play this game to explore and actually most of the time stay away from others to build my own little SpaceSimCentral 🙂

Weather effects and space effects (nebulas, comets, etc) will be the fine touches that will make the game epic. Now going under water I think would be overkill least in the initial release but afterward it could provide another whole universe to explore.

My concerns sometimes is that Infinity will have no real alien species (don't quote me on that going off memory) and out of the millions/billions of stars/planets you would probably find something other than human life. They should have some sort of alien species even if it is you discovering them on a distant planet that could take you years to find.

I know that Infinity is still Pre-Alpha and I am sure decisions on the game are still being discussed. But who knows what surprises the Infinity team will have for us when the game is release quality.

words can't describe the feeling of vastness I got from these vids. I remember thinking: "Ooh, nice background...", and then he CLICKED ON A STAR!!! not a background. OH MY GOD.

I am however wondering about actual gameplay, I mean as D1 said, you can fly around for ages without encountering players so that makes me wonder what you actually do in this vast (and very pretty) universe., and how much NPC's are in there and what the missions will be like. The site doesn't offer much info on this besides "twitch-based combat"

because i don't have much time to play besides the job and the dev (the only game i play sometimes is a modded civ4) and i'm not interested much in network games (my counter-social side), if i play it it will like as you, far away from any annoying human beings 😆

Your counter-social side? You mean the one that regularly comments and interacts on a social forum like Spacesimcentral? 😛

Lol, just kidding, I understand perfectly; we're all like-minds here, filtered by this being such a niche site. I'm the same as you. I don't play online games largely because I hugely prefer gaming by myself, away from the plebs and knob-heads that exist in their endless multitudes. I've never tried an MMO yet and have no desire to...

...except for this one.

If the galaxy they are aiming to create is as big as the mouse-clicking on stars suggests - and OMG I very nearly floated out of my seat on pure adrenaline when I saw that - then it might be easy to get lost in the big black for extended periods, just pootling around the various planets on offer. Heck, we space-simmers should perhaps keep in touch so we can meet in the game. "Loners of the world : Unite!" Hehehehehehe.

farcodev wrote:
Yup it's hard yet to know how the gameplay will be, a 3d engine is a thing, a game is an another one.

We'll see 🙂

True. But right this minute I couldn't give a fig for the 'game' that the Infinity Devs want to present. Just give me a ship and let me loose, is all I ask. 😀

Everyone will always have a place to hang in Infinity. Because I plan to make a very distant outpost in a totally random star system. I will announce the star system and in the hopes that some of the members can float the fuel bill to make it out 🙂

I like MMO's in general as long as they are fun to play and there are not a-holes in the game trying to ruin my fun. But with the scope of Infinity being almost limitless it will probably be just close friends that hang out and try to build a nice little empire in our small section of space.

I am really interested in seeing building deployments and mining rig usage. But what I would like to see is a way for a gamer to be able to be self sufficient and not have to make too many trips to a star port. I would like to be able to mine all my resources and refine those resources into fuel and materials used to make my outpost.

But overall like the planet transitions a lot and the visuals are really well done. And I hope they have probes in this game so I can plant them in space and when you get close you will pick up the signal message.... "This area is patrolled by SpaceSimCentral, any violators of borders will be dealt with. Have a nice day.... move along :)"

Maybe going under the water is taking it a bit too far, but it would be nice to see a vid

of any water and weather effects, 🙂 also there seems to a lack of clouds on the planets.

Thinking about different types of planets ect,one thing I would like to see in this type

of game is to find a solar system which is still in the early stages of formation. Where

the Planets are still being bombarded by asteroids and comets, they would be incredibly

dangerous systems for ships to enter but the mining possibilities could be vast.

Was over at the Frontier Forum and Callum Rowley (The Community Manager at Frontier Developments) had this to say about the Tech Demo Video....

"The tech demo looks great; they've done a really nice job thus far. I'll certainly be keeping an eye on its progression to see what else they pull out of the bag. Community-generated games are great for the space simulation scene; and we're always pleased to see them come to fruition at Frontier. "

I guessed this already, but its nice to see anyways. Also perhaps it will give a little moral boost to Flavien Brebion and the rest of the dev team to know their great work is being appreciated by commercial devs, especially so if it's Frontier Developments. 🙂

It would make sense that the Frontier guys would be watching this project. Because in my opinion Infinity is the closest thing to a Elite 4 style of game, that is current out or in development. And if the Infinity team can really give people what they want you might not see an Elite 4 imho.

Game development takes a lot of time and money and I am sure the Frontier team is debating whether the Elite 4 venture will be worth the time/effort. Yes there is a lot of die hard fans out there but really how many? MMO's are a risky business today, you see more fail or do F2P after 6-12mos and it makes it very difficult.

Now I know Infinity will be a MMO, and I believe I heard rumors that if Elite 4 was developed it would also be a MMO. So only time will tell. The I-Novae engine is just an amazing engine and hope Flavien Brebion can make some money off of its licensing. And really make Infinity what all the fans of the space gaming genre want in this type of game.

Now what would be cool is make two types of Infinity games the MMO and a SP game to please everyone. 🙂

Yes Darkone, it would be good to have a SP Infinity, also I hope viewing the Demo, will give the Frontier folks a kick in the butt. If they don't act, someone is going to get there first. The Infinity team have proved this. I am still "keeping the faith", but time is running out. If Elite IV were to be released after Infinity, it's impact on the space sim scene would be reduced, unless of course it has some features which sets it above the other games out there. Time will tell I guess 🙄

I was re-watching the videos and wanted to get peoples thoughts on the entry/exit of the planets atmosphere. I know the engine effects probably need more refining but not sure if this was the lighting effect of the sun hitting the ships haul just right or was I seeing the lighting of the haul because of the effect of entry/exit of the atmosphere.

I do like the planet terrain a lot and can see spending a lot of time flying over it all trying to find the best spot to drop a mining rig or scoping out the best spot for SSC's outpost 🙂 Especially if the I-Novae engine is that good by producing planet effects like storms, winds, eruptions that type of eye-candy will just be amazing.

I'm under bad suspicion that Flavien is doing this only to sell his engine to EA, Activision or similar companies.

Someone mention here "DEVS". There are no devs here, his the only guy behind Infinity, others are just contributors.

His final plan is "sell the engine" but that takes time and huge effort to be achieved and seen by big sharks for big cash.

Infinity by itself can't hold water without some serious cash behind for server mainframe like EvE, because it's complexity and no company will deal with it, if they do not own it.

He's very careful with code and he doesn't share any info around it, nor he will allow other programmers to help him out.

I know about him from GameDev long time ago and unfortunately I have thoughts.

I hope I'm so wrong, but common sense gives me bad results.

people, you should read the long text that was posted on the Infinity website about this video... it explains all aspects of it... from the lack of clouds to the re-entry effects...

Thanks AcesHigh 🙂 I was so excited to watch the videos I didn't even bother reading the small write up on the videos that was posted. But here is some interesting parts of it and here is the link for those that want to read the whole thing: http://www.infinity-universe.com/Infini ... &Itemid=26

Quote:

The backgrounds you see in the video ( starfield, nebula ) are dynamically generated and cached into a cube map. This means that if you were located in a different area of the galaxy, the background would be dynamically refreshed and show the galaxy from the correct point of view.

Each star/dot is a star system that will be explorable in game. In the video, as I fly to the asteroids ring, you will see that I click on a couple stars to show their information. The spectral class is in brackets, and follows is the star's name. At the moment, star names are using a unique code which is based on the star location in the galaxy.

Besides the planet descent and ascent this was the next biggest wow factor of the video demo. That right there just shows the massiveness of the game world itself and will have a fun time with it. Kinda like in Star Trek picking the third star on the left 🙂

Quote:

I'm not totally happy with the look of the planet, so it is likely that in the future, I will at least do one more update of the planetary engine. There are various precision artifacts at ground level, as the heightmaps are generated on the GPU in a pixel shader ( so are limited to 32-bits of floating point precision ). I've also been forced to disable the clouds, which totally sucks as it totally changes the look & feel of a planet seen from space.

Now we know why the clouds are not there yet. I know the planet surface needed a bit more polish. But the planet looks better than anything that is out today so good job. I can't imagine what it will look like after another year of tweaking. I would be great to mass through some massive atmosperic clouds with storms and violent activity on the planet.

Quote:

When the ship enters the atmosphere at a high velocity, there's a friction/burning effect done in shaders. It still lacks smoke particles and trails.

So I was right that the lights simulated the entry into the atmosphere. So will be cool to see the update to this in the next video hopefully showing off the heat caused by the entry into the atmosphere. Great stuff.

----

Maddog it has never been a secret that Flavien Brebion was going to sell the engine to developers and he should it is an amazing piece of work. And if he can make a tech demo aka a game to show off what it can do all the better to make money for himself. Do I wish Flavien had a bigger development staff, hell yeah I do. I would love to see Infinity progress in development more quickly. But I also like the fact they open their doors to the community and are putting in there models into the game. These are some nice models btw so it really is some quality stuff and it saves dev time because you have some community members doing the work for you while Flavien concentrates on the engine/magic to put it all together.

Yes I think money will play a big factor in the releases of Infinity. I think it won't be to hard to find a publisher to back the deployment of the game. I think he is doing it this way now to have total creative freedom. Because once he has a financial backer they usually want to put their .02 in and alter the game to get it out quicker. I think we will see a better game in the end on the road they are on now. But I could be wrong. I havce just seen to many games ruined by the infuse of publisher cash.

That's what I'm talking here in fact, Infinity will not be seen in the light we are seeing now.

I know it's not a secret about selling the engine, nothing wrong about that, but Infinity will not be the game at release as we would like to be and play, unfortunately. Publishers will not allow existence of that game if it's not owned by themselves.

You said the rest, Dark.

You really think so Maddog? There has to be some justice out there to actually let the developer develop their game to completeness 🙂 I do hope the team behind Infinity holds out as long as they can and gets the game close to complete before shopping for a publisher.

Infinity really has a chance to really be the epic game every space gamer has wanted. If they do it right a publisher wouldn't need to put their .02 in because people will gravitate to it. Yeah EVE Online has some decent scale and large community put really lacks the freedom to do whatever you want and really be self sustainable.

I know the Infinity Team is wanting to have a alpha build completed by the end of this year so if they can meet that mark it will be a huge success. To see pre-alpha footage like this is truly inspiring on what they could bring to space gaming if they are allowed to continue. Maybe after another update from the Infinity team I will probably see if I can get another Q&A.

Wow AcesHigh that game is now no more. Those videos looked really good and a shame that this game will never be released because of Intel. But I think if that Project Offset would have waited to get a publisher pretty much at the end of development/finishing touches phase this game would have probably came out. I would say the same would probably be true to Infinity. If the devs can get the game they way they want it they have a good shot of getting the game to the public without major game changes.

I can definitely see Maddog's point of view on the publishers no wanting to give creative control back to the developers because it is their money. But usually an investment into a game is really an investment into the company/people creating the game and there is usually no other group of people that want a game to succeed than its creators. I know it is hard to self publish these days and be successful but it can happen with the right community behind it and the right game.
