To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

Hello people,

Do you think real 3d galaxies with 'up' and 'down' sector directions are a good idea, or just horribly confusing and too big? I mean sectors with x,y and z coordinate.

Nice idea but would a 3d galactic map still be able to give the player information on where for example the various empire borders are,any DMZ between the empires, where the player position is in relation to the empire. Or any other information which could be shown on the galactic map like stellar objects ,black holes nebular ect .Maybe sticking with the old 2d map would allow the player to access the information quicker than a 3d one?.

Disregard comments as I thought this was about the 2D galactic map not the 3D one.

I've been dieing waiting for this implemented. very much needed!

something along the lines of Celestia would be ideal...

not before we have a center map key  (to current, maybe instead to current position, to current selected)

imo it's not really needed, but i wouldn't mind, of course

wouldn't that mean you would have to fog sectors, let's say farer as screen width/height and a even similar value for z then.

else gets a bit complicated when thickness is like at center of galaxy

on the other hand you wouldn't see all of the sectors.

looking at what i have written now, rather a no as a yes.

not to complicated, but robs playability points 😉

besides of realism and what can be done, a nonetheless important factor (for any game)

it's something like the FE2 style hud

could be done "better", at least more modern, half transparent, arranged like a "real" desk and so on

but playability will lack then

I think a 3D galaxy based on the Hipparcos catalog would be ideal. I haven't looked at Celestia in years but I tried Ad Astra several months ago. An Elite inspired game that didn't grab me, but I was impressed with the galaxy map. I'd show it to you but "Sorry the board attachment quota has been reached." Anyway we'd definitely need a center key. I once saw a Star Trek 3D galaxy map that showed the affiliated areas of the Alpha Quadrant color-coded. There are, of course, quite a few of them and it was perfectly clear. It even showed Gorn space! 😆

Its a great idea but I think I already told you I thought that.

I dont think it would be too complcated for pioneer players to grasp.
