To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

Pioneer-alpha21 not starting

Hi everyone,

just joined the forum so forgive my ignorance, but I can't get alpha-21 to run on my laptop. After double-clicking there is simply no response. I must be doing something wrong, but I have no idea.

The images of the alpha builds already look amazing, and I would love to try out the alpha game.

Thanks

Just some more information:

I did unpack the zip package ... and I can open files like the galaxy.bmp, but for some reason clicking on the pioneer.exe (and also on the modelviewer.exe) does nothing.

My laptop has an i7 with 2 GB ram and Windows XP SP3

Anybody have any suggestions?

Hi, which OS are you using?

The Linux download does not work on my system as some of the dependencies on my machine are newer and fail the validation check of the prebuilt version on the website. I have to download the version from Git and compile myself (which is easy).

I have not tried the Windows version yet.

In your 'My Documents/Pioneer' folder are three interesting files: stdout.txt, stderr.txt and opengl.txt. Could you please post them somewhere and link to them here? I recommend pastebin.com for this.

Those files should provide enough information for us to start figuring out what's going on.

Hi Robn,

turns out the my documents folder is the source of the problem. I am using a laptop from work with a networked my documents folder. As I am not connected to the company network (working abroad), the my documents folder cannot be accessed. I guess the pioneer.exe tries to make those files you mentioned on the first run.

I have had a similar problem with an application, and solved that by changing the target of the my documents folder to a local drive.

I repeated that for pioneer, and ... it works. Pioneer starts! 😀

My lunch break is over, so I can't test further, but I saw the main menu.

Thanks for your help, and thanks to all the team members for creating pioneer.
