To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

Pioneer Hosting Question

Active Member

Hi People

With regards to Pioneer i would like to host it on Elite Forever and wondered if i required permission and if so who do i ask ?

As Pioneer is one of the top Elite style remakes i would like to add it to my mod page along with the others.

As with the other mods on the page users will be able to download it with its own Launcher to add to their collection

If you check out the "Fan Based Mods " page you will see what i mean..

http://www.eliteforever.co.uk/

Thanks for reading

I can speak for Pioneer itself. Mods are individually licensed by their authors, and you'll have to check them individually for permissions.

The short is yes, you may host Pioneer on your site, distribute it, sell it, remix it, whatever you like, all without seeking permission. The main thing you must do when doing this is ensure that people can get the source code to whatever you distribute, including to any modifications you make. Share and share alike, in other words.

The actual legal bits are outlined in AUTHORS.txt and the license files in the licenses/ folder. There's loads of discussion and analysis of the specifics of these licenses on the internet so I won't go into it here.

So that's what you can do legally. Personally I'd prefer it if you linked back to pioneerspacesim.net instead of hosting yourself, or at least mention the pace that we develop at. We've had other sites host the game before and it invariably gets stale. Also I'm not keen on being called a "mod", because we're trying to stand on our own to a certain extent. These are personal preferences though, not requirements <img src="' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_e_smile.gi f"' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Totally agree Robn, Pioneer is not a "mod", it's a game in it's own right. And yes links might be better synchro as I know all too well about things going stale as I constantly try to keep Pioneer's ModDB fresh with the monthly Alphas and screenshots from lots of people who contribute them. Basically then, if you are going to host it, I would also recommend you keep updating the Alpha, or do the links and add screenshots instead, that will give you less work, but it's your call. <img src="' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_e_smile.gi f"' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

That section i realise really has to be renamed to "Fan Based Games" as does the "Mod Launcher" to "Games Launcher" simply because most are independantly running games that you can add Mods to so i will probably implement that on the next update....The one thing i still have to do is add a links page so of course pioneerspacesim.net would be linked without question and the launcher does contain a Website button to the the main website.

Regarding the hosting i would have liked to incorporate it into its own Launcher to go with the others on the website making them more of a unique download from Elite Forever and collectable for users without the hassle of setting them up themselves its just click and play ( not that Pioneer is a problem like FFED3D is to get running ) and i realise update would be regular so i would have to keep on the ball with Pioneer..updating the Launcher regularly..

Having said all that irrelevant to what the Licence says i can do...... I always say..... Respect the Developers wishes......So if you would prefer me to just link back to you on my links page then i am more than happy to do that.

Thanks for your prompt attention <img src="' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_e_smile.gi f"' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

The Launcher sounds cool, actually, a great value add. No, if you've got good ideas for things to add, go for it. If you were just offering a link then I wouldn't much see the point in not just linking to us (we have a pretty awesome CDN for distribution). But if you're actually extending the game and making it easier for people to use, that's something very different <img src="' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_e_smile.gi f"' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Simple solution. Have your launcher with the version of the game prominintly displayed, and nearby also a clearly displayed link saying something like: Get the lastest Alpha version from SpaceSimCentral here and the latest development build here

Yep, if you make a launcher of the game, you stop being a Pioneer fan and instead become a Pioneer dev synchro! How about that? <img src="' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//girl_crazy.gi f"' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':girlcrazy:' />

It would be a bit more à propos to link to pioneerspacesim.net instead of SSC to get the alpha, Loki99 <img src="' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_e_wink.gi f"' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';-)' />

Hi Again ...Looked at all your points and am making a few changes to compensate but only if your happy..

Firstly i am renaming the page anyway on the Website to " Game Remakes " and the Launcher to " Game Launcher " rather than " Mod Launcher " ..........So far so good <img src="' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_e_smile.gi f"' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Now if your happy this is what i had in mind....

This is the Oolite Laucher...The game has Mods to add hence the Mod Button and the website button to Oolite of course

oolite.jpg

This is The Pioneer Launcher....No Mods so the button is replaced with the Update button taking them straight to your Alpha page downloads

The Website Button obviously takes you to pioneer.net...Basicly with me updating the launcher on your releases it should stay up to date <img src="' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_e_smile.gi f"' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Also once i add the links page pioneer.net will be there

pioneer.jpg

Like i explained the Launchers can be collectable and they are standalone runnable games no install reqiured ( Not that Pioneer had that issue )

and gives " Elite Forever " a bit more uniqueness ...Not trying to pinch anyones thunder but i do want the best on my site so people will visit and

hopefully Pledge on Elite Dangerous......Like i said i respect the Devs preferences so if thier not happy still then no probs <img src="' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//bye.gi f"' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':bye:' />

Thanks for reading.................Does look cool though dunnit <img src="' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_e_smile.gi f"' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
