To all SSC Station occupants
Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.
Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

one of the freakiest things is to fly into one of those spiky asteroids, you can travel with a little patience to the core of the asteroid almost without any damage.
you will find yourself in some sort of hollow world, from which all spikes will start, the engine doesn't really allows this and from roundabout 1000km it get's really hard, the "core" and your ship start to act like magnets with the same polarity, you steady will be pushed away, but if you set a very low speed, about 15m/sec you can reach the core to 0m distance. if you are nut's enough (or lunatic <img src=' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//wink3.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' /> ) to do so.
i've made some screenshots, but they are still in "Ulisbach", also i would have a alpha26 savestate close to the core.
as i travelled to through the spikes of the asteroid i also landed once "accidentially"... head over, that was the moment when i thought, hmm...
can i get to the core? interesting i'm hanging here likewise i would have landed in a hollow world, up is in fact down.
the most interesting views you get close to the core, if you reach it finally all is simply black around you.
it started all with my natural curiosity, i thought, "let's see how deep this spikes are.... man they are deep.... damned **** deep....
what does this mean?... is there no real surface? let's see..." well like i said, as i landed, i landed headover and straight above me was the "core" (no real core, all is hollow inside), while my ship was hanging headover in the hollow asteroid.
when inside, from far it looks like you would see the stars at the end of a tunnel, but in fact those are the ends of the spikes which face away from you on the other side.
something different, does one know a good virtual machine for win7, to emulate win 98/Me? like "Wine" for the MAC, something really easy to install (wine is brillant, i really was surprised). a win 98, Me and XP i still own so a different solution would work well, it just has to be easy as 1,2,3.
of course one of the first things was to see which of my games aren't running anymore, ok pioneer is fine <img src="' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_e_smile.gi f"' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> very fine with my new toy, even rotten FFED3D runs flawlessly.
only my "shitty" old Sports Car GT, won't work, but it hasn't already worked under XP, DX6 isn't supported anymore since then.
it works with the software renderer, but that's really no fun to play, everything is missing and if you burn some rubber or get just a little of the track you won't see a * for long, because of the immense smoke clouds.
what has surprised me how the DX or the machine, i'm not sure, can change the physics of a game, i played "beetle buggin", ha, ha, occasionally my car started to fly around, i got it running then in win95 mode, which has fortunately helped. SCGT looks funny in D3D mode, you will be nailed on a spot, you will se the AI track marking points, the environment is a repetive section, but you can hear your competitors racing properly, you hear every gear switch and breaking, but won't see a *.
ok it's a bit off topic, anyway, why does one play SCGT from '98, well simply i found no replacement for this game, never.
easy to modify, user made tracks that will make every racing fan addicted, physics i never have felt again in a racing sim, and the possibility to tune your car near to reality, no ABS, no anti slip control, no gimmicks, pure fun through the right degree of realism, not to much but also not to less or stupid unreal behave.
you can set up everything from conditions of a 30's oldtimer to a recent Grand Tourismo car, heavy nose weighted muscle cars as well as tiny midgets.
automatic gearbox with kickdown behave as well as the feel of a 30's compressor motor which runs on very low RPM. rebounce that either works like steel suspension or like a hydraulic suspension of a citroén, which lets you glide over the ground like in a spaceship.
in this game a jaguar type D (yes D not E) acts like a "top modern" aluminium light weighted car from the 60's, as it should be, a beast to handle. ever wanted to feel how it is to ride a Ford GT40? SCGT will show what this car makes different to all the rest of those days, besides it never has reached again and real F1 pilots have big big respect of this monster, SCGT can show you why. "endless" HP and no ABS, heavy weight but a power in back that will let you jump to the moon, if accelerated in the wrong moment. really i was freaking out when one of the F1 pilots showed off the car on TV and described how it is to drive, exactly what i felt in SCGT.
somehow cool, nailed on the ground like a plank, but just touch the pedal a little in the wrong moment and... bye, bye..., super stiff, but also mercyless, no mistakes allowed, not even tiny mistakes. erm what hydraulic steering? i never heard of such....
funny is on good a force feedback wheel you will feel this, you will need power to steer the GT40, usually the steering wheel likes to be in middle when driving this car and you really have to tear at the wheel. really it needs a position like a real driver, hands close together and arms fully streched out, else you won't have any control over the car. just steer a little, it acts like a oversized massive overpowered go-cart, steering is direct, no reduction ratio. i mean the car likes only to go straight, he really dislikes curves and you have to show him who's master.
it's really my most loved car, even better as the McLaren....
oh, besides, i've read today on logitechs page that their new steering wheels have a action radius of 900°, whatfor? to drive a truck perhaps, but the GT40 need a action radius of 180° to get handled proper, i found out all old racing cars will work best with this limitation of the steering wheels action radius, what is 900° good for, i really have no idea (yeah, for driving heavy trucks and busses, but is that fun?) hey, no hydraulic, no "untersetzung" (no gear ratio).
next post will be sci-fi related, i promise <img src="' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//wink3.gi f"' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />
Hey Gernot! Yesterday I was watching this "ship" and thought, "How would a motorcycle space, designed by P66?" <img src="' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//paint.gi f"' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':paint:' />
It would be ideal to run between planets skewers "porcupine". <img src="' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//crazy_pilot.gi f"' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':crazypilot:' />
Hi P66,
There is no out-of-the-box, plug and play emulation for the Windows95 series of OSs (That's 95, 98 and ME) but it can be done using a VM as you suggest.
The simplest one to set up, although possibly not the best, is Microsoft's own Virtual PC which is a free download. VMWare also produce a superior VM but it can be a pain to get running. I'm not sure if this will run your games as there may be some Direct3D and DirectX issues.
Full guide here (this is for 95 but will work just as well for 98) : http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=208008
If you really are into retro gaming, by far the best way is to get hold of a PC from the era; your local Ebay should turn up something!
Or have you tried D-Fend Reloaded? That can run games from that era, here is a link to its features
yeah, thanks Magnox, machines i have enough, three i guess, need some fixes but ok.
"out of the box" i didn't expected, even if "wine" has surprised me.
but i still have all original softs so a VM will do the job, yes i forgot or couldn't remember where i got the VM from on my former machine,
sometimes it's easier to ask as to strain your nerves, thanks.
looks like i should sell one or two on e-bay, lol.
no i'm not into retrogaming, i'm THE retrogamer (one of them at least).
what does mean retro? i grew up with them, each is a part of my life, retro isn't the right word somehow.
besides retro or not, hmm since a quite a while i have problems with newer games, not that they won't be good or that i'm to bad in gaming,
but i don't know, crappy? short time runners?
on the other hand i don't mind if a game last's only a afternoon to play through, depending on the genre of course.
but often i miss something, might be the humor, might be i don't know or perhaps i just grew to old.
true is also that i haven't the right money to buy new games, or i'm not willing to spend it for this.
i've spent far to much money for computergames in my life i guess, enough for a lifetime i feel.
if i think that i spent every cent of my pocket money in to those "evil" slot machines until i bought my first console.
that i bought countless games for the inty over sega and snes to miggy and pc, it's really enough for a lifetime.
and thanks geraldine, i forgot this one to, you mentioned this one before, no you promoted it here as i remember, right?
but D-Fend runs with DOS-Box no?
DOS-Box is super for running old DOS games, but i'm not sure if it's useful to setup a windows environment under it.
i used it to play FE2 and FFE in their original releases, i prefere this to GLFE2 or JJFFE,
i know i'm a strange dude, and nothing can replace the original, that's more a question of "feeling" as there would be a real to measure difference.
likewise i will always prefere to listen to a noisy scratchy old LP wether a clean CD it wasn't alwasy that ways and in the beginning, when digital media started, i sold or gave away already far to much of my original records, today i regret this much, it was a big mistake. but it's funny, i really was annoyed already by hearing only a slight static noise when listening to the Who's "Quadrophenia", record players and pickups couldn't have been good enough. today i wouldn't mind a bit about this. but that was different times no? times when you went to the record shop and listened to 20 records before you bought one...
-
times was really different, guess a shitty compactdisc costs in fact SFr 3.- to produce including copyright fees, a record costs easy 3 times more to produce, but the price hasn't get lower for a CD, no vice versa i would say. it's not that the record seller will get this profit, no.
i remember a shop in zurich who sold CD's for a fair price, guess what happened to him, he and his store has been raid, he was punished with baseball bats to stop this behave, of course "just some crazy nazis", no one will know who hired them.
still music industry argues about less profit, do you have a word for them? i'm speechless!
thinking about such i would say piracy is only fair today, nothing else <-> mafia methods?
"when i walk cross "Limmatplatz" (that's zurichs wallstreet) i sing out loud with no shame, wherewolves of london!"
and guess what, they didn't have no idea about what i'm singin'!
-
in fact i have gettin' very precautious back then, taped every record i had, because i made the experience that they could easy receive a scrach when my friends and me was smokin' and listing and perhaps jokin' to. not to extreme, i'm no "i store all in a safe" guy, but i wanted to keep them in a acceptable shape.
but ha, ha, children can change a lot, well my pipe broke several times and records received many many scratches and i had to learn not to mind about "he's just a 4year old boy, it's not his fault, so don't get angry gernot, it's only a shitty thing which is broken, no soul has been hurt"
but i respect the effort our two friends put in this much and without this we all wouldn't be here and play/co-develop Pioneer
i must say i've gettin' lazy, you know that former i was the one who showed on Frontier forums each and everyone how to run the old "crap".
but yeah it always needs time... which i actually rather like to spend here or with my models as to investigate it in solutions to run a old game.
I should have said that D-Fend can run some Windows games too Gernot (including Win 98), sorry for not being clearer there <img src="' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//girl_impossible.gi f"' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':girlimpossible:' />
hey thanks, ok, i will take a look at it then.
besides it's not my most important task i have, pioneer has priority over everything, sometimes even higher priority as food <img src="' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//wink3.gi f"' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />
now don't say a word, i know... but i don't care to much.
i use to love things to dead (until they are, lol).
I'm playing the game Legit these days, no money cheat.
I've flown from Lave to Earth as a kind of "cheat" because you start with a HUGE ship (relatively speaking) and I just traded down to a trusty Eagle Bomber, upgraded the hyperdrive, autopilot and atmo shields... and off I went! <img src="' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//wink3.gi f"' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />
Starting on Earth or New Hope I've been running guns... seems the easiest way to make a decent profit on a bulk freight run. I just upgraded to an Eagle Bomber and as soon as I can afford a scoop I'll be off to explore!
Are there any other good trade routes or circuits?
I've got legal guns from Epsilon Eridani to Sol (sold in Berg market on Tomm Sanctuary... Vive le Mars Libre!!) for a nice 110 into 200 (small arms) and 220 into 400 (heavy weapons).
Mining doesn't work, though "fuel" scooping is OK...
Either water needs to be MUCH easier to gather or we need to be able to use hydrogen in the Reaction Drive... having a fuel scoop working at full capacity but not being able to replenish the fuel gauge is a bit maddening!! <img src="' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//wink3.gi f"' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />
