To all SSC Station occupants
Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.
Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

It's right in the centre of the galaxy. 25,000 light years.
I flew it.
From Sol, it takes getting about 700 jumps, using a class 3 military drive in an Eagle MK-III. Magicking up fuel and the odd new hyperdrive, and leaving less than five seconds between jumps, this took almost five real-life hours to accomplish. Each jump was roughly 40ly, sometimes less. The time lost on the game clock was over 35 years.
What happened when I got there? Killed by Agamemnon. The black hole is much, much larger than the 10AU at which the hyperdrive drops you. I appeared inside it somewhere. So, there's no way to get into the system from outside at the moment. It remains inaccessible.
The galaxy is a huge place. I crossed less than a quarter of its entire width. I didn't explore its length and breadth at all.
I couldn't have managed it without a cheaty-script. Here's that script:
https://gist.github.com/1433651
Just download that, and put it in data/modules. Make sure it has a .lua extension, and I'll meet you on the bulletin board.
That's awesome! Our first probe to the center of the galaxy! It made me think. It took you over 35 years to get there, which is within the general time frame of the voyager probes. You had to cheat on the tech, with the fuel and drives and such. A largely self-repairing ship with a fuel scoop could get how far in 35 years? This could be used as a way to realistically calculate the distance from Earth the farthest explored systems would be found.
Hey thats really cool, well done Brianetta! 🙂 Must try that out! This is what a space sim should be about, getting out there and exploring 😎
Is there anyway to mod the entry point of the hyperspace jump to leave you a safe distance from the event horizon?
Unfortunately not - its all internal game stuff. I've raised issue #821. Its a fairly easy thing to change if someone feels like a fun little project!
Was having a think about changing the distance you could jump to within a system. If this could be changed by the player by way of a "difficulty setting" it could make the game that much more harder as in, doing delivery missions or anything else for that matter that relies on tight deadlines as you would be entering a system much further out than normal and so, increasing your travel time. Also, it would give more opportunity for pirates and other villans to intercept you too 🙂
My script has been refined. It now makes many, many small jumps, instead of pushing the engine as hard as it will go. It only uses the longest jumps to hop over really big empty spaces between stars. As a result, it now runs within the scale of human sanity. You can physically traverse the galaxy almost as quickly as the map scrolls with just the arrow keys.
Same URL as before ( https://gist.github.com/1433651 ); just save that to data/modules and look for me on the bulletin board.
New numbers for you. The improved script, when used to travel to the black hole, takes about 3,000 jumps, but only takes one and a half hours, losing only 11 years on the clock. Ta-da!
hey, brianetta
i have'nt read that before.
i did it to, but with a cheated drive, about 400LY each jump. still took some time to get there but i didn't have posted what's to find there.
to sad you have done it, the surprise for followers is gone.
first i decided to make a clip of my arrival but after i recognized that it will kill me, i decided not to post it.
can't you keep such "secrets" for your own? i mean even the troll with the loose mouth was able to shut it for once.
that's a bit sad, only a little bit, i would have liked it if no one would have known it.
the reason is simple, no one will follow you or me to agamemnon now.
i was aware that someday one will post this for sure, but on the other hand i trusted everybody will feel the same as me, surprise will be gone.
btw, you can advice D1 to delete the thread, newer members won't know the fact then.
really i think it's a bit poor to reveal such "secrets".
fortunately i missed this thread, else i wouldn't have tried it.
well, perhaps for the future...
since we have the www everything has changed, many games lost their secrets, to much imo, i liked such surprises always.
well foremost i live in a valley and not much was known there about computergames (not only), unlike to city dwellers who exchanged their infos even before www.
of course it was helpful and even interesting later to read reviews or walkthroughs, but they even take the magic out of any game, it's not funny to play a game by a walkthrough, similar to unlimited lives, power or money.
i am a cheating bastard, yes, but i use it wise and never in a "real" game.
the temptation is big, especially when some doors are locked and you can't see the solution.
but since i made to much negative experiences, i usually left the solutions or walkthroughs aside, it's not funny in certain games.
elite, FE2 and pioneer are a little exeptional to that, because you have no given path to follow, so there won't be a walkthrough for real.
the most evil thing is to cheat money and even that didn't takes all the fun of them. even a cheated drive can be fun, at least i didn't needed to long to get to the SMBH.
btw, pioneers galaxy is damned large, such large that i cant think actually of a real use of that.
a possible idea i often thought about, is to change the population of the galaxy to widely spread all over the galaxy and use complete different ranges (thousends of LY or more).
i know it would be hard to find populated systems then and that's a big disadvantage of this idea.
another thing which crossed my mind sometimes is to seperate possible factions very far from each other, but even that leaks.
so i never opened my mind about that and stay to what we have or what FE2 has drawed.
but somehow it's sad, at least we don't have a galaxy of paper cutouts and should use that.
else there will be nothing to force you to explore it, mostly because it's with all it's beauty still to repetive.
btw, the actual spreading is fine, at least systems are'nt to close, could be imo a little wider spread, you know i don't think we will find many suitable places in reality in our galaxy, on the other hand i don't mind to much, it's a game 😉
To be fair to Brianetta, wasn't he asked for this script? In anycase I am sure that is one system that will get customisation at some point in the future so that sense of wonderment will still be there. 😉 After all, just making it all the way out there without cheating, is an accomplishment in itself 🙂 Its certainly one of the things to do on my the list once the game is "finished" or near finished 😀
hi ho,
yes, thats remarkable to do it with the standard drive.
you would need a path of inhabited systems to get there, i guess.
i could make one for you, why not
Surprise? Come on, this is alpha software. There's absolutely no guarantee that what's there now will be there come the game's release. No surprise has been spoiled; we don't even know, yet, whether there will be a surprise.
I think that people will go there anyway. That is to say, Gernot, that your supposition (that I have revealed that there's a black hole where there should be a black hole) might stop people wanting to travel there, is wrong. It's wrong, and shows a lack of understanding where it comes to adventurous players.
By the time anybody actually travels to the centre of the galaxy, what's there might have changed anyway. In fact, the chances of the saved game format being the same between a player setting off, and getting anywhere near the centre, are extremely remote. It's ridiculously distant.
Geraldine: The system in question is, and always has been, completely custom.
It's not a secret. Even if it was a secret, I didn't actually reveal any details about the destination. "It's in the centre of the galaxy" is common knowledge. I'm really not sure why you're complaining. I certainly don't believe you have any grounds for complaint.
brianetta please don't twist my words.
"if i had knew it will kill me, i wouldn't have travelled there", that's all.
simple no?
needs no explanation or a big tam tam.
i don't wanna fight with you, i can only loose this battle, there is nothing i can tell, of what you wasn't able to use it against me.
that's easy, everybody can do that.
i don't know what is heaven, but such is hell.
Well, it doesn't kill you to travel there any more. Are you trying to say that the player being killed by a bug was a surprise? You've change my opinion of your post, from unreasonable to completely incomprehensible. /-:
From Sol, it takes getting about 700 jumps, using a class 3 military drive in an Eagle MK-III. Magicking up fuel and the odd new hyperdrive, and leaving less than five seconds between jumps, this took almost five real-life hours to accomplish. Each jump was roughly 40ly, sometimes less. Something about this is Douglas Adams-esque and I like it 😀
definately, yes
as well as it was surprising being killed in FE2 by beta lyrae (right?), which is also simply a bug.
anything i can't foresee is a surprise, else it wouldn't be a surprise, or we must have very different meaning about what is a surprise.
is something i can foresee a surprise?
is only something like a present a surprise to you?
of course i expected something else, or do you think i didn't peeped into the script?
is that incomprehensible?
you surprise me sometimes to... 😉
but i guess nothing can surprise you?
man, i can't forsee if i will wakeup from sleep tomorrow morning...
so each morning is a surprise to me.
be thankful for every morning!
start the day with a song, like a bird; "i love the sun"
i do love the sun, burning fire, blows away all doubts and evil shadows, shows reality and truth.
yes, good that i have a reason now to get there again 😀
definately, yes
OK, let me clear this up right now. That wasn't a secret surprise to be spoiled. That was a bug to be reported. It has since been fixed. It no longer happens. It had been fixed before you had even read the thread, because it was fixed weeks ago.
