To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

A dutch political action group was stopped by the police to carry a coffin with the word privacy on it into the train, to take it from Amsterdam to Utrecht, and have a ceremony where privacy is 'buried'. This was done as a protest action against the Public Transit Smartcard, which tracks all traveler data realtime and stores it into a database of a private company.

This private company is well known for its breaches of the law and privacy in The Netherlands. Even going as far as suiing journalists for it. And harassing activists.

I have been reading a lot more on this privacy intrusion lately in various articles online and it is concerning really, that you no longer have control of what people know about you. A few more years and the govt's of the world will have all the consumer mobile products to use as they will. These devices has people's lives on them and can track them wherever they go. Technology is good to a point before it because a intrusion on my right to be alone and my privacy. Hmmm maybe someone needs to come up with a 'blackout' type device that when turned on the mobile device signals become dead and cannot call home unless deactivated. I think this is what we need now with dead zones. With cameras starting to be everywhere who knows what it is going to be like in 10yrs.

Hehehe the NSA has been making a lot of headlines in the USA with there blatant misuse of powers, heh they probably have already flagged this post and looking into me right now 🙂 Big Brother ...

In Europe work is well underway for a replacement internets based on P2P technology and mesh networking.

One of the applications now being tested for it is Serval Mesh, which is used by the red cross to provide telecoms in areas which have been hit with disasters which knocked out their telecoms infra.

Combine the 2. Then you see what the IT crowd in Europe is working on 😉

/edit

After a bit, the thing you linked sounds very similar.

In Europe the things have been in development since before the nsa revelations. The accelerated developments of these techs have been triggered in Europe by this: http://www.energybulletin.net/sites/default/files/Peak%20Oil_Study%20EN.pdf
