To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

Film based on the Edgar Rice Burroughs books about Mars and the character of John Carter.

Never read any of the books so it will be interesting to see this.

I haven't read this either but just might need to. I hope they go a little deep into how all of this happens because it does look like some type of alternate universe type of movie? I could be totally wrong. 🙂 I just hope Disney does this movie justice they haven't really come out with a big hit for sometime.

I have read them all a lot of years ago (the first three a few times) and I'm looking forward to the movie version, especially because there is Pixar behind, their first no full CGI movie.

BTW no alternate universe per se, more like a steampunk ante litteram.

Debatable quality but clearly seminal work on paper, will see on the silver screen.

It is one of the classic of scifi, strange how there been no films made of it before.

Too expansive to be made with the pre-CGI special effects and a little too adult as a story to become a cartoon, I mean, no children and no cute animals as comic relief.

New trailer and you have to watch it on 1080p 🙂

I think Disney will have a nice hit on their hands in March

It looks like they have Mars low gravity in there. 😀

I have never read this book and don't know much about the story but it seems to me to be like an off-shoot to Superman in a way with going to another planet where you are considered super-human and invincible. Or least it seems that way... I think Disney if they do this right and the special effects are top notch that they could have a nice hit on their hands. I think this movie might get my butt off the couch and into the movie theaters.

From what I have been reading this has turned out to be a bit of a flop.

So looking forward to getting the DVD of it. 😆

I have read that as well. But everyone that I have talked to that saw it in the movie theater loved it. I think Disney plan and simply screwed up with the advertisement of this movie and didn't focus on the story in the previews. Yeah the trailers show plenty of action but it also needs to show the storyline, I had a co-worker tell me that this movie was better than Avatar.

With a film that cost this much to make I bet they had to cut it down so I hope they make a directors cut version that may include some scenes re-inserted into the movie. I usually wait for it to go to video as well. I think movie houses give up too quickly on movies. They have to understand that people have a hard time going to the movies and paying the higher prices when they can just wait 3-6mos and buy it for the same price as a ticket.

Has anyone actually seen it? All I keep hearing about it is how it's such a great big flop financially, but going by the many successful films I thought were awful, that's not really a good indicator of whether I'll like it

oh my god. This looks pretty epic. Definately a must watch! And maybe read.

Why is this the first time I hear of this?

I've not seen the movie (nor will I), but I remember reading the Barsoom tales as a teenager, and not being greatly impressed.

My children were happy.

I myself think that those who messed with the original storyline were not at the same level of the original author.

Mind well, they had clearly good intentions but the result were way sub-par.

The most difficult part of the movie (theoretically) were the green men and they were believable and expressive (maybe even more than some human actors).

A pity... there will be no follow ups in the next and possible medium future.

In comes out on Netflix soon in June and I was going to get it and watch it before I buy the Blu-Ray, but the people that I have talked to about the movie liked it. To their credit none of them ever read the book (and neither have I) so they based it just off the merits of the movie.

It is not a bad movie and, as I said, my children loved it.

I have found it a bit too long and, imagine, the boring parts (and characters) were often the ones that had been added to the original story.

Now my children are reading the books. They have the right age, I do not think I would appreciate them now as I had then.

I would agree Bertipa having just watched the DVD, it' not a bad film just a bit derivative and plodding. None of the action sequences seem to get going and most of the cast seem to be just sleepwalking through there lines.

Not much on the DVD just a commentary and a making of feature.
