To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

As I have already said, I would not count on this. The game compression and asset removal is unlikely to yield such high gains that we will be able to reduce our client size to 30-40gb. The size and number of assets that are left to deliver means that our client size is much more likely to be 100gb.

Also, yes we are optimizing game patching for speed and to only deliver diffs, but this is unlikely to reduce actual patch size. Again, each patch has 100s of assets, each of these assets are at times 200mb, this leads to 2-6gb patches, and if we end up doing a file type re-factor and have to re-download 30-40% of the assets on the hard-drive, then the patch will be 14-20gb.

Think they will need a bigger USB stick if they still intend to send the game out and if they don't I don't think I will be downloading it any time soon.

Long download times don't bother me too much, I don't anticipate repeating the process too often.  (Well, I'm saying that being used to the Steam servers which are frightfully quick, it might not be so fun at 300kB/s.)

That said, I'm getting rather tired of feeling the negative pressure on the metaphorical walls of my SSD.  Prices are coming down, but tech is changing, and I'm wondering if the new ultra-fast NVMe SSD's will be accompanied by a resurgence in prices.  I'm not keen on the prospect of prices skyrocketing every time drives get faster, storage needs to be cheap in this age.

Just start the download and go to bed or work and the bulk if not all of it will be ready when you wake or get home. Granted this depends on your bandwidth on when it gets done but just leave your PC on until its done.

I was wondering how they were going to do these amazing visuals in a multi-player game and know I know 🙂 no streaming content over the line because its all in the client and just data is being fed so it should run smooth.

Yeah, visuals have no effect on multiplayer whatsoever.
