To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

What was your favorite Wing Commander game?

Hey Everyone

I loved playing all the classics when they were the latest in graphic technology and innovation and have very fond memories playing these great games from the 90's. But if you had to pick just one of the WC original series games which one would you pick as the best one? Yeah I know I have excluded Privateer and the others because they are spinoff's of the series. Maybe someone create a post of that one. 🙂

I know my choice is Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger. The story was great and hey the videos put this game over the top (least for me).

Happy Gaming!

Original Wing commander was the best.

The dynamic campaign and the dynamic inflight tracks just make it one of the best games I have ever played.

I really linked WC4 personally. WC4 was on like 5 CD's and the in-game video was great and I liked the story a lot.

I personally like Wing Commander IV best. It was the first Wing Commander I've played and for some period of time I couldn't get enough of it. I really liked the character of Admiral Tolwyn in the game...

Damn, I really feel like installing WC IV again... 🙂

A lot of people hated the FMV in those games but I thought it was brilliant. The story telling was great and it captured you in front of your screen for hours waiting for the next briefing or cutscene. Where is Chris and Erin Roberts.....? Another WC game needs to be made.

I liked WC2 because I prefer the ships of that era. It is for this reason that I also enjoyed Standoff.

Privateer (I)

Strike Commander

Oh, what? Those aren't Wing Commander? Sorry... I thought they were!

OK, I played them out of order so I can't really remember which WC was my fav. I did get a big kick out of Rachel (Ginger Lynn) in... what? WC IV? I kept going back to the hangar hoping to catch a glimpse of her when her overalls weren't zipped up all the way, but no joy (sigh).

Malcolm MacDowell was great, too. Wait, I just looked this up... both actors were in WC III (along with Mark "Looks 'Hammered' to Me" Hamill), just like your fav, Darkone!

I got the early Christmas release or whatever they called it... the one that came in a film can with a video tape, book, and other extras. I played the video tape for non-gaming friends so that they could get a glimpse of what I liked about the game. It was an excellent communication tool -- more games should come with a pop-in-the-dvd-and-play trailer like that.

I liked the first one and played it lots of times until Elite 2 came out. Still a great game series though, and does deserve a nicely made modern day sequel.

I have always wondered why EA doesn't take this well known franchise and resurrect it. With the right funding and give creative direction back to the Roberts brothers and you have yourself a hit 🙂

Exactly! Wasn't one of the Wing Commanders the most successful-at-something-game-ever? Like "WC IV sales were $4 million in the first week -- the most successful new game in history" sort of thing? Don't quote me on that statement -- it is re-assembled from just a few vague synapse firings -- but something like that?

I don't know why the Roberts brothers left gaming, but I wish they were still here. I miss their sense of balance.

And, if I had to choose one or that other, I would much rather see another Wing Commander game than another Wing Commander movie!

🙂

Couldn't find any info on WC4 but found this on WC3:

Quote:

Again, no exact figures are available, but an April article in the Houston

Chronicle reported that the game grossed twelve million dollars

($12,000,000) the first day of release. Origin reports sales so far of

about half a million copies.

Now there is a few factors in this WC3 sold for roughly $20 per copy not like today's standard $40-50 range for PC games. But 500k copies on first day is a good release. I'm sure WC4 had more because of all the hype and production around the game.

EA wont do anything cause they're evil!! 😛 .. like how they've been siting on the System Shock license for like 12 years now. If they remade 2 with modern graphics and crap. They would make a fortune, that game has almost a big a cult following as WC does. But that's most companies, sit on things people want, and just spill out crap no body but incompetent gamingtards want. It's sad really.

Hello Folks

Well given that EA is sitting on their hands (I'm being nice), I have long ago moved on to the fan produced games. WC:Saga being the latest one I have been able to find the time to enjoy. I hope they get around to releasing their full version but the Prologue is rather nice. Mine you I wish the thing had a cockpit but since it was created using the freespace2(I think) engine and mod tools I shouldn't complain.

I have posted a lot of info on WC Saga and I am very much looking forward to this game when it is released. There is a bunch of games I could think of that I played in my early PC years that given a make-over could be a really big hit.

I mean even if you directly ported all the WC games to an updated engine and put in the HD movie cutscenes it would be amazing. Game companies just need to pull there heads out their asses and listen to the gaming community. Yeah I like a MW2 style game but they wear off in a few days. I find myself going back to the games I love space games and rpg/adv.

No one usually comes out with a game anymore that actually has replayability and more than 25hrs of play time. With looking at some of the games that are coming like Heresy War, Naumachia, Jumpgate Evolution, Black Prophecy, Infinity ang my new favorite Starpoint Gemini. The gfx engines are there and looking amazing, now we just need more single/multi player games with great stories and immersive gameplay (and of course the procedurally generated universe that never ends :)).

It would be great to see EA reboot this series, but if you do EA do it justice and do it right. Get the Roberts brothers to build it and let them have total creative freedom.

Hey PINBACK

I forgot about that, man 20 years where did the time go. Oh well, lets see what happens. Mine you given the market's saturation and infatuation with first person ground shooters, I wonder will the suits in marketing let EA revisit a darn near dead (to them anyway) genre. Even one that made money for them back in the day.

Oh by the way, I just downloaded and installed the WC:Saga revisit/redo of some WC-4 missions. They are as fun and challenging as I remember them. Well if fan builds are the way of it then I'm happy as long as there are groups of folks willing to spend time for us all.

Well after I get my Wing Commander Fix I might try that remake of the original Privateer. After that who knows ....... there is always the freespace2 Babylon 5 conversion (or the B5:IFH simulator). I wonder if they ever added real Starfury maneuverability and physics (sort of like the hardlight BSG sim) to the FS2 version???

Does make you feel old when you know you actually bought the original WC in a store when it was released 🙂 I want Origin Systems back so badly, I don't think EA could successfully re-launch the WC series without messing up this classic franchise.

Hello Darkone

Yup it does. Now to be bluntly honest I didn't own the PC I purchased WC-1 for, it was an office machine. Sooooooo I played it late after work and on weekends 😉 . The really bad thing is that WC-2 bumped up the system requirements a bit and the office machine played it a really slow; combat at some points was like swimming underwater. Does anyone remember the pausing that used to take place mid-mission in WC-2. I really hated it but given the PC was below the system requirements I had to live with it.

On your other point EA couldn't relaunch the thing without the Roberts' being there it just wouldn't be the same. Speaking of them, just what are they up to now???

I owned WC1 on the SNES when it came out. Didnt actually own it on the PC till 98 when I bought the Kilrathi Saga pack. Now that was an awesome pack. I never had any problems playing any of the WC games on my superior cool PC at that time. It was a 133mhz with 16mbs of ram, and a 2mb intergrated graphics card. It was the bee's knee's man! 😛

I loved WC4 for the videos. If you pasted them together, they would stand on their own as an exceptional movie. The atmosphere was very convincing and the story and dialogue were intelligent and mature, which cannot be said for WC3 or WCP. Truly a gem, this one.
