To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

FrontierGL Save game editor ?

(@styggron)
Estimable Member

Hello everyone.

I couldn't find a Forntier GL sub forum so I created a new thread here.

Just wondering if anyone knows of a save game editor for FrontierGL at all ?

Indeed I have not found any save game editors for FE2 Amiga version, only PC version and unfortunately I could not get any of those working. There is a russian GUI based one I saw that also did not work. I just wanted a quick money cheat to get me started. I even tried the "trick" of selling all equipment putting in a cabin and then selling the ship but that does not work on FrontierGL (or the Amiga version).

Sooooooo I then tried a money cheat which was changing one of the .OVL files which I did, sure this works for the PC FE2 I then tried to use THAT savegame on Frontier GL to no avail.

Any ideas for GUI based save game editors that could work with

1. Amiga FE2

2. Frontier GL

3. FE2 PC version (Did see all the ones at Sharoma too and tried some but I was trying to avoid using a hexed etc but I fear I might have to).

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

🙂

🙂

I don;t know why this thread has appeared three times, SSC stalled with errors during the post and it must have posted 3 times.

Hopefully the MODS can delete two of the repeated posts. Thanks.   🙂

Have you tried the ones on Aminet for the Amiga http://aminet.net/search?query=frontier don't know if they are GUI ones.

Shame theirs no version of Buffet for Frontier, only other suggestion I can make is go through Steves links at Frontier Astro http://www.frontierastro.co.uk/links.html if you have not done it already.

Hi Styggron,

You should ask the author of GL Frontier for this. His site is:

http://tom.noflag.org.uk/glfrontier.html

Or:

Have you tried to use the same directory structure than the original F2 game? If this works, and if GL Frontier can read a saved game from such a directory, then you can as well use a savegame editor designed for the original F2 (I know there are a lot of add-ons and tools for it).

But other than a savegame editor, I would much like to be able to run GL Frontier fullscreen or at least get the standard window larger. I didn't succeed in doing this, and that's a pitty because this game conversion is the best Frontier 2 I know about.  Changing the monitor resolution will make the game window larger, but will also mess the grafics 🙁

As for the fullscreen, just press F11 and enjoy:) I would like to know how to use old FE2 savegames in GLFrontier (it doesn't recognize saves from "regular" versions).

Hi Riker,

thanks very much for the tip. How could I possibly missed that one... 😎 😎 😎

I think that, except the grafics of course, the game is similar to the Amiga version of Frontier 2. This version has some extra goodies compared to the PC version:

- Wormhole routes can be used to jump into very far systems with almost no fuel consumed.

- No Mine Vehicle Bug: when leaving the system after deploying the mining vehicle, the game will not crash like in the US PC version (there is a patch though).

There is a savegame converter for both the PC and the Amiga version which is called SGE. It converts from binary to ASCII and back. Once in ASCII there is a readme that explains the entries to change to have more cash, change ships etc.

For GL Frontier the only method seems to be: you must use an Amiga Emulator, load the SGE program and convert the GL Frontier saves, then change them for different ships and one with lot of cash (so you can buy the ship you want). When finished, you can save these files in the "savs" directory of GL Frontier. This **should** work (I have not tryed it though).

No Trainer, but here are savegames to use with GLFrontier:

http://www.sharoma.com/frontierverse/saves.htm

Use those in the Amiga section and save them as text within your browser. Do not copy/paste in a text file, otherwise they will NOT work!

With most of them, you should start with a lot more credits than just the stupid 100... If you think you have too much money, you can always do a donation in the Bulletin Board 🙂

The Amiga saves all work in GLFrontier, I have just tested the PantherC one.

Enjoy FE2!

Hi MadMax,

I know that there are quite a lot of trainers that had been published for the DOS version of FFE or for the Anisotropic Modded game (JJFFE from John Jordan). I don't know about the one you mention here, but If you want to play with these trainers, you will have to play FFE with DosBox or better with D-Fend Reloaded v.1.3.3 which contains DosBox 0.74, the best DosBox version ever because compatible with almost all DOS games.

Unfortunately, most of the FFE  trainers or ships and other add-ons neither work for the OpenGL version or the D3D version of the game.

IMO, the best way to play FFE today is to download AndyJ's reworked D3D version, which you can play with or without the Anisotropic mod (JJFFE). It also contains BUFFET, a trainer where you can do all sort of things, even influencing the enemies you encounter + a lot of other things. Get it here (chose the 2nd download):

http://www.frontierastro.co.uk/Hires/hiresffe.html

The Ittiz version 0.3, also found here in the download section, is still a WIP with some important issues to be corrected, and I don't know if it's really different from the version above that works perfectly. The Ittiz version may not start in Win7, 64 bits and if it starts, it will show serious grafic glitches.

I hope this helps you, and have fun with FFE 🙂

To my knowledge, the JJFFE Aniso mod 2.8 was the last one of John Jordan's mod. As for StarFlighSys_xxx.exe, I don't know what it is, I've never heard of.

John Jordan had a site that is not active any more (JJFFE Central), but you can maybe find it in the Internet Archives. His ex-site would be the best place to find about existing mods or trainers of FFE. I have separately saved all his FFE documentation, so i may take a look.

But I'm not sure that I understand you: do you need help with StarFlighSys_xxx.exe, or did you just mention a trainer for FFE? The better place to post would be in the FFED3D section. Also GLFrontier and FFE are 2 different games (see thread title!)

Here some pointers in the jungle of Elite games:

Original games - Remakes/Conversions (not exhaustive):

Elite

Elite Plus - Oolite, Elite TNK, others of minor importance

Frontier  II -  GLFrontier

Frontier First Encounters - GLFFE, FFED3D (*)

WIP by David Braben: "Elite: Dangerous"

(*) : both include John Jordan's mod JJFFE (Anisotropic mod).

MadMax,

now I have found the file FFEStarSys.zip you are talking about!  I just didn't remember, because at some point I was looking in the net for a savegame editor for GL Frontier, but I found nothing, instead I downloaded FFEStarSys somewhere and tried out if you can modify savegames. The result was negative:  It only seems to work  in 1 direction:

Reading savegame > FFEStarSys > Data Output of star systems + other info.

So, for GLFrontier (not FFE!), what mostly would help but probably doesn't exist is: a trainer or savegame editor capable of quickly changing the starting credits WITHOUT changing your military rank.

The best thing currently to do in GLFrontier is using one of the savegames that I mentioned above and do the following:

In GLFrontier, load one of the savegames above and:

- Make a larger donation in the Builetin Board; keep pressing the largest amount for quick cash decrease 🙂

- buy the ship type you want to start the game with, make upgrades,  make another donation to "round-up" your starting cash.

- Save the game.

It's very close to a game start with higher credits, with the difference that you start with a higher military rank. The savegames are crypted in GLFrontier, no hex-edit possible.
