To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

open source space simulation to clone major titles like elite dangerous, star citizen, no man's

(@wingnexius)
New Member

This is mostly a disorganized list of ideas for an open source game engine and space simulation game called windwalker:

Oolite and pioner space sim both have free space sims available on linux, which is great. It would be really cool if an open source clone of the new elite dangerous was spawned which draws from star citizen and no man's sky; we need more HD textures in our open source space games and more feature like planet surface exploration and mining. The ability to build ships and create bases really takes the game involvement to another level. Take a few pages from the book of the folks over at EVE online. X rebirth was quite good too.

What I am effectively looking for is an EVE online clone with single player story line like freelancer. I want the modernized look and features that are presented in elite:dangerous, star citizen, and no man's sky.

Features lacking or missing in those titles include: Ability to board/pirate ship after disabling engines and docking, first person walking hand-to-hand and weapon combat, ability to buy a planet to build a base and industry, terraforming missions, ability to launch probes and drones, involved collection and reverse engineering of alien artifacts, large space combat with 3rd person command module, large battleships that contain smaller ships, technology hacking and password cracking, user create-able weapons, fully integrated trade market and stock investments, outpost and city creator, ability to create jobs on the bulletin board, alliances and guild play, location based damage and focus on skill, real-time development of technology and upgrades from engineers, use of upgrade-able on-board computer which can be overloaded or hacked, EMP for battle sequences and piracy, infinite procedural generated solar systems and plane features as well as bases and enemies, in-combat party customization and ability layout, rich feature cartography tools and data collection objective, cheat codes (console) and modification plugin ready for offline and custom server play, large volume power sources and collector arrays but there is a need to refuel or hibernate the ship to continue travel (can fuel scoop stars and gas giants, can use hydrogen and oxygen [lithium] mined from asteroids, upgrade-able powershed), cloaking ships and body armor, need to repair ship at mechanic or manually with engineer skill and supplies, larger ships can matryoshka doll nest smaller ones in their cargo, crews can be hired for missions, building and piloting of mech ships and suits, flight path and orbital planner, realistic gravitation and star proximity, realistic planet size and atmosphere transitions, ship overheating and radiation damage, need to maintain oxygen levels for crew and fuel consumption, need to have food to feed crew, sandbox buildable and destructible environment, main world wormgates and hidden gates as well as short range ship jumpdrive, business alliance such as transportation or private security, multiple currencies (silver, lithium, hydrogen, and universal credit) and forex market, bartering vs selling system for ship dealers and junk yards, in game drug trade and blackmarket goods, transportation of people and livestock (needs food and oxygen over time), integration of web browser and text/voice/video chat into system hud, full text to speech support and vice versa, realistic weather on planets, cooperative multiplayer play, create your own faction and create star bases and ships, user created job board and user controlled stock market with player companies interactive, fully interactive virtual reality immersion and full controller support with remapping (integrated xpadder and 3D headset ready), regional item availability and faction based relations, ship upgrade system with modular design, include the sol solar system and incorporate real star maps, character creation and class design, fully interactive universe with "alternate endings", fully modable, steerable weapons, location based damage and realistic depreciation, you can buy gear for your character, you can own multiple ships, fully interactive cabin interior, hire crew for multi-user ship actions, augmented vision (night vision, thermal vision, holographic re-imager, etc...), fully supported botting, fully explore-able worlds and player interaction spaces similar to second life, dock ships together in space (space transformer fusing), multi-user bridge, aspect of stealth-adventure fighting, integrated solar system creator (like universe sandbox), and many other features we await to be developed.

What an ambitious project, but everything you are talking about in your posts sounds great its just getting enough people on board to help development move more quickly so we don't see the Infinity: Quest for Earth situation where the game was announced 6+ years ago and its still not here 🙂

That's one hell of a list, although you forgot the kitchen sink.

Would it not be easier to take an existing open source game like Pioneer or Space Engine and modify it.

Yep, feel free to fork/clone the Pioneer code etc, it's all open source.

Just abide by the licence(s) to keep the source code open, otherwise you can do what you want with it.

The main problem I have with forking/cloning the pioneer code is the logistics in incorporating an entirely separate/plugin scripting engine, the plugin/mods, and that the game itself would need a pretty large overhaul to support high-res graphics, and virtual reality gear, multi monitor support, and opacity of in game HUD. Also, I don't think pioneer woudl support my extensive use of procedural generation and artificial intelligence that learns over time.

That being said, if it is possible to copy snippets of the pioneer project and get them to run with the new game, that may be reasonable; as long as I can latter add in all the functionality of my game engine which has features commonly found in more modern polished game titles.

So I may copy some of the code from pioneer, but there will be extensive overhauls, and part of me thinks that starting from scratch will yeild the quality and depth of achievements slated for this release.

By the way, how many of you would support or know somebody who would be down with a crowd-funded open source cross-platform space game (linux/mac/windows)

We need an alternative to Oolite and pioneer, the game-play style is just not polished and refined to my standards, and they are in serious need of an overhaul. In my opinion, a whole new game is necessary to pack all of the features designated by this project idea, though some cross support for pioner would be nice.

I estimate the crowdfunding required to make a game that compares to a game studio major release would be in the range of 864k - 1.296M to purchase equipment, hire developers, publish project information, and tools needed to develop the game. Be expecting elite dangerous or kinetic void quality production here, plus, this is not just a game, it is a game engine made flexible enough for a plethora of uses outside of space simulators and first person shooting.

Vega strike, Oolite, and Pioneer seem to be the only contenders in the open source space simulation game so why not another. Those games have low quality graphics, limitations on the number of objects that render in the sky, a lack of realism, and a low tech user interface. Couple that with weak AI that do not learn, and from what I understand, lack of multiplayer support (At least in Oolite and Pioneer) Plus in my game, I want the player to be able to explore the planet surfaces and build bases, command multiple ships in battle from a cruiser, and have all NPC's generated by "sexual reproduction" through genetic algorithm rather than "spawning". If i integrated those features into known projects, I think I just might break them.

Is it worth making another open source space simulator if it is sufficiently different and modernized to catch the eyes of some more paid release gamers? Please give me some feedback on project feasibility and whether you think the project should just be a fork of another release or be an entire new release on its own 🙂

Please help me validate this idea!  :read:

I don't think there would be much support for a open source crowd funding game giving that it has become much harder over the last 18 months to get support for crowd funded games.

I would say that there is maybe only three choices for making a game.

1 Custom built game engine.

2 Commercial or open source game engine.

3 Modification of an existing game.

As D1 mentioned above, Infinity a good example of how long it can take to get projects going and open source one can take even longer as people only tend to work on the bits of the game which interest them.

@wingnexius that post is way too long and unformated for any sane person to make it through to the end, which is a bit of a shame, so I'd suggest editing it to use headlines, paragraphs, bullet list, tables; to make it more readable.

The usual reply:

You might not be aware but you now have two pioneer devs replying in your thread, and soon to be three, I suspect, so please try us. You're most welcome to contribute to Pioneer with scripts, missions, improvements, mods, ships, graphics, realism, code, art, AI, or whatever.

The lack is not in people dreaming big, but in people willing and able to get the work done.

"high-res" graphics? Well you can render the screen to whatever resolution you like, textures are supported all the way upto whatever your GPU can handle, there is a WIP post-processing framework back-ported from Paragon too. Can't get "higher-res" than any of that actually.

I wrote a OculusVR implementation for Pioneer last year but they updated their API which broke it, I'll need to write a new one but it's not too hard, a day or twos work. I've not done it because I've been waiting to make sure their API is stable.

Multimonitor support should just work so long as you've got it set to treat it as a single virtual screen, actually supporting rendering different things to different monitors would take some work.

"opacity of in game HUD" - erm, yes we can fade out the HUD if we want, 10 to 20 minutes work to implement that.

"Procedural generation" - models are the only things no procedurally generated. The galaxy itself, every star system, planet / moon / gas giant etc is all procedural. Adding procedural ships / stations / buildings etc would be possible, you just need to write the generator for it, like I've been doing recently for asteroids.

@wingnexius: I agree with impaktor and the others. That wall of text is too long and lacks any structure to be useful.

It's nice for sure to dream big. But even for a smaller dream, structure is a must, especially for a computer game. (sorry if I sound a bit negative or harsh, but I saw plenty of big dreams driven to the ground, or into stagnation. I even had the opportunity to be part of some. Hell it seems I'm part of one right now too (and I'm not referring to Pioneer. Pioneer isn't stagnating in my eyes, even if we are a bit slow with it these days.))

I'd like to ask some key questions in hope to help developing your idea:

  • What the game is about? What's the hook? Why people will want to play it? You should be able to answer this clearly with two or three extended sentences. (Citing other games doesn't count.) This thing is called a synopsis. If you can't do this, then you don't have a clear picture. Also if you don't have a convincing and engaging one, nobody would give you a dime, be it a producer or the crowd from crowdsourcing.
  • Have you thought about the visual and aural feel? How the game will look and sound?
  • How you want to pace the game? Fast? SLow and contemplative? Or give this choice to the player?
  • Have you tried making a simple game on your own? That's a very important thing, to go knee-deep into development with something so you really see first-hand what's needed for making one.
  • This is where impaktor's suggestion heavily comes in: why don't you try helping us out in the making of Pioneer? We have quite several areas in need of polish and further development. We are a friendly and welcoming bunch.
  • In what role you want yourself in the development of this dream project of yours? What area you would be working on most of the time?

I actually tried to read through your text, and I've got pretty far, but eventually gave up. But even then, I noticed some inconsistencies and self-contradictions (like using code from other open source games vs being closed source for a couple of years.)

And honestly I haven't really found anything that got my attention. The whole thing feels like noise for me. A bunch of unrelated ideas and buzzwords piled together. The game isn't visible under this pile of stuff. Even the title of the topic is unstructured.

Also just to point out a bit of detail: I don't really see the point of including a virtual computer capable of running windows or linux in any kind of game. What plus this would give to the game? How this would make the game more engaging? (Notch, the maker of Minecraft wanted to do something like this, but eventually gave up.)

I suggest you should first think the whole thing through and write that synopsis. Without that you have nothing. If you think of it, you could describe every successful game, film or novel with a couple sentences. True, these sentences won't give you the meat of the thing, but it shows you the overarching concept of it.

Then you can slowly build the structure of the details and tidbits, the actual meat of the game on top of that.

Going from the big concepts towards the tiny stuff, not the other way around. And do the research, the homework for those details.

If done properly, this will give you a good solid design document, the foundation you could start building your game and gathering a team.

There's not much point contemplating crowdsourcing and workforce gathering before you have that.

Also, even though I don't think there's any point right now for you to think and plan about the funding, but  $1.3M seems to be quite a low target if you want to do this with hired work and company assets. For Elite Dangerous, they've got almost the double of that, and they had to pour in even more money. And the company aren't really doing that well financially I heard. Star Citizen collected like 60* amount, and their game scope is quite smaller than what you wrote. Actually neither of the games you cited has this kind of scope.
