To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

The Odyssey - a turn based retro SciFi fleet combat game

Hi all, I'm developing this game, The Odyssey. As the title says, it will be a turn-based scifi tactical combat game. Think X-Com meets Battlestar Galactica. I have just put together a video showing the animation system I recently implemented.

It shows the art style I chose for the game. It is set in a future where GPUs suffered a rapid decline and everything reverted back to vector graphics 😀 In truth it is because I am no artist neon vector graphics are a cool artistic choice!

I always wanted a game where you would play the role of a space fleet commander. I felt there was an over-abundance of real time scifi combat games and a severe lack of turn-based ones. Hopefully, The Odyssey will fill this void. In order to avoid the game becoming a repetitive click-fest and eccessive micromanagement, one of the main features of the game will be the concept of Command Points. That is you, as the commander, will only be able to advise a limited number of other ships in the fleet each turn. The rest will behave according to their captain's AI and high-level mission goals. The game will be played on a hexagonal map.

If you want to know more:

  • Here is a post about the making of the video I posted
  • A post describing the story and setting of the game
  • I regularly post updates on my blog, on twitter and on other indie gaming sources
  • Any feedback (and help, especially from artists!) is welcome 🙂

The engine I'm building for the game is already open source and you can check it on GitHub. Other developers might find the UI library especially interesting. It can be integrated in your existing projects easily (without too many dependencies) and supports several cool features such as animations, databinding (MVVM-like) and attachable behaviours. Check it out!

Like the graphic style reminds me Tron or some the early 8/16 bit games. 😎
